Today we were busy!! We woke and had a lovely breakfast including the most delish hash browns, beans and muffins. On a mission today we went into town and had a look around. Queenstown & Milford Sound

The flight from Sydney to Queenstown the next morning flew by in just two and a half hours and we were soon descending through the mountains on the dramatic descent to the airport.

We checked into St Mortiz hotel and promptly headed into town to purchase a few more layers of clothing and comfort ourselves with a hot drink! After running away from the southern hemisphere winter for the last few weeks it suddenly hit home with full effect.

Excellent accommodation. Stayed here for 3 nights in September and absolutely loved it. The one bedroom apartment was so spacious and the service was excellent.

Missing a few extras that you would expect from a hotel of this quality, such as a gym and bathrobes, but overall I thought it was excellent accommodation. Definetely recommended to anyone staying in Queenstown.

The one bedroom suites are very spacious with large tubs to soak in at the end of the day. You do need some strong legs on you to get up the hill each day if you don't have a car but a reasonable level of fitness will stand you in good stead. We would come and stay here again!

The Hotel is located a short walk away from Beach Street & Shotover Street, the main streets in Queenstown with an excellent commanding view of the Remarkables & Lake Wakatipu. We had a single bedroom suite and it was certainly luxurious. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Queenstown is expensive but if you did need a place to stay, St. Moritz is right on top of the list.

If only all hotels had this class. From the moment we arrived and walked into the lobby, I knew we had made the right decision. It just feels great and I can see why it has won all the awards. This hotel has great views from most rooms and from the bar and restuarant it is simply fantastic. The staff are immaculate and the most friendly I had ever encountered. The best thing about the hotel is that it is just a few minutes from the centre of town but is actually secluded as well. I have stayed at most Queenstown hotels but I am coming back to St Moritz for ski season.

Very nice hotel with good views and close to town, 5 minutes enough to be away from the noise. Good rooms with kitchenette, underground parking. Bar and foyer very nice, with open fires and marvellous outlook over the lake. Excellent restaurant (Lombardi's). Very friendly staff but not obtrusive. Highly recommended. Also consider Outrigger in same position, more recent building.

When in Queenstown, I usually stay at the Heritage, but on this occasion they were full, so I booked into the St Moritz for $220 per night. When I pulled up, the bell hops were unloading a tour bus and were too busy to help me out with my 2 bags. I carried them down the stairs to reception and was met by a very cold and unwelcoming receptionist (remember I am there to pay her wages!). I was given a room and had to carry my own bags down again and mentioned I had pulled my car up outside, of which I was told I had to move it immediatly. I offered the keys to reception so they could get a bellhop to move it, and was told they were busy. Had to take my bags downstairs and then go back up to move my car.

On checking into my room, it was a dark musty room overlooking hundreds of cigarette butts which people had thrown out of the windows above and the view was of the back entrance of a motel type unit. The room, even with all of the lights on was shabby, dark and smelly.

I ordered room service which took over 45 minutes and after checking out the bathroom, decided to call the Heritage in case any rooms had come available. I was not prepared to stay at the St Mortiz for another 6 days. Luckily, the Heritage had a room for $129.00 per night including breakfast, so I booked in there and left the next morning, after being charged a horendous amount for a breakfast no better than a Holiday Inn Express (sorry Holiday Inn's - your breakfasts are better!).

Suprise suprise, I encountered the stroppy receptionist when I left and again, no one to assist with the bags even when I asked on this occasion.

I will not be back.

I thought this was a fabulous hotel - I was very pleased as the airport shuttle pulled in front, most of the other hotels on the way seemed disappointing for the grandeur of the area. The St Moritz was the exception. It is close to downtown and all the shops and restaurants (within walking distance) but far enough away to not be noisy. Front desk was very nice and upgraded my room to a suite - very nice and large with kitchenette, living room, very large bath. The lobby area was grand and had a chalet feeling. I accidently broke a lamp and they didn't charge me. I would stay here again in a hearbeat.

It's just about time that I head off on my annual New Zealand Ski holiday and the Mercure Grand St Moritz is the only hotel I would want to stay in. I've stayed 3 times now and they greet me like family. From the moment I arrive my troubles are forgotten. My ski equipment is whisked away by a handsome young porter to be safely stored as my rental car is valet parked. My room has the most awe inspiring view. I love the double doors to the suite's bedroom that allow a sleep in after a night out and the roomy sitting area. I also love the funky lobby and the big fireplaces. The hotel's restaurant does the best lamb & beef I have ever tasted and the staff could not be more attentive yet discreet. Really I could go on and on. I highly recommend the St Moritz as THE place to stay in Queenstown.

Going to Milford Sound from Queenstown - Avoid the Mercure Grand St Moritz Hotel. * Front Desk is a bit arrogant so don't expect a warm welcome. Bellhop? -- Sorry, you're going to have to carry your bags here. Room Service? -- I watched the front desk clerk juggle a tray in front of the elevator, drop the domed plate cover off one of the dishes, set the tray down & pick up the cover, smile at the crowd in the lobby while replacing the cover on some poor guest's meal, and continue on her delivery. * Kitchen is totally incompetent - After waiting over an hour for a dinner meal where there were only about a dozen others in the dining room, we left to go find food elsewhere. While waiting, I did plead with the wait staff for some "fresh baked bread" for which I was going to pay extra -- it was served still slightly frozen. And the management who said that they would not bill me for the drinks and bread and lone appetizer ended up billing me $33 anyway. * Ambience is severely lacking. The fireplaces in the "library" and main hall are gas log types that the staff turns off at every chance. The library has one big bookcase which houses nothing but the last 25 years worth of dog-eared editions of National Geographic. The hallways are full of those plug-in air deodorizers that makes the whole place reek of a musty bathroom. The panoramic view from our 2nd floor room was that of the kitchen and bathroom of the house next door. * Our "deluxe" room did not have sufficient electrical outlets to recharge camera batteries or plug in a laptop computer. There are no "data" ports on the phone to check email from your room. The advertised 110V outlet to run an electric shaver is really 240V, but who needs to shave on vacation? The maid likes to unplug the clock radio every day, which means you get to call the front desk for the correct time if you happen to be 16 time zones out of synch. And if you want to see how big the mosquitoes are going to be in summer,the picture frame that's falling apart over the desk in room 203. As advertised, the Mercure Grand St Moritz is "truly a hotel with a difference" that "will ensure that your stay in Queenstown is truly remarkable."

Lovely alpine style hotel/apartment overlooking the lake and the Remarkables mountain range from an elevated position, yet it is in central Queenstown! Helpful staff and there is spa and sauna to relax in at the end of the day. Highly recommended!
