Tour Ends: Paris - London

We said good-bye to a few people in Paris this morning and then drove to Calais, caught the ferry to Dover, and then our final bus trip back to London. By 4pm, we had farewelled the rest of the group and was checked in to our hotel.

Dr Evil was a fantastic tour director, and we will miss his quirks and laugh. He is 67 years old and has been leading tours for over 40 years.

We had just enough time to cram in the London Eye and a visit to Harrods and Oxford Street for some last m...

I stayed at the St giles 2nd thru 4th January on a sightseeing trip in London. The hotel is in an excellent location and despite what it looks like from outside - when you walk through the front door it is alot different. I stayed in a twin room and although quite small it was well equipped and very clean (i work in housekeeping in a Marriott and was very impressed with the cleanliness). The room was fine for the two nights but any longer than that you'd be getting under each others feet. The thing that let the hotel down was the breakfast. It is served between the two restaurants and the lines are huge, once you get to the buffet there is a wide choice of food but the cooked breakfast was always cold and tasteless. Also we got woken up both nights once by rubbish collectors emptying a bottle bank and the other by workmen starting in the street very early morning although this is not the hotel's fault it's just part of the central location.

Overall a good place to stay when wanting to be near the shops and attractions... just eat out for breakfast and watch out for the workmen!

No charm, and fine for the price

A friend and I shared a 2-bed room here as part of a British Air package deal at New Year's. First room we were given turned out to be mega-noisy because of renovations going on (buzz-saw noise); hotel was fine about giving us another room which was adequately quiet. (I always travel with earplugs in any case.)

Room was small but totally clean. Location not lovely but safe and excellent for getting anyplace as it is right near Tottenham Court Road Tube, and surrounded by anything you'd want (Internet cafe, Boots, etc.).

Breakfast was plentiful and slightly funny, served in bar, with giant MTV screens overhead.

If you order a margarita in the evening, ask them to hold the butter. (i.e. - fuhgeddaboudit, no idea what they are doing)

And -- the free gym is the size of a University gym, if you like that amenity this place is for you.

Best Location for the price

We have stayed at the St. Giles Hotel 8 times in 9 years and it has improved every time. With a little work through BA travel, rooms can be had for a very reasonable price considering it's London. But the best thing about the St. Giles is it's location. It's within walking distance to much of what anyone comes to London for, West End shows, Piccadilly Circus, Liecester Square, Covent Garden, British Museum to name a few. And for things somewhat further away, it's right next to the Tottenham Court Rd underground station. Eight years ago it was listed as a 2 star now most listings show it as a 3 star. The rooms are small but if you're like us you don't come to London to stay in a hotel room. We'll continue to stay at the St. Giles Hotel.

Do not touch it with a barge pole

from martmcgrgr
The biggest positive about this hotel is its location. On the corner of Oxford Street and Tottenham court Road. Handy for theatre land and shopping. From there on it is all down hill.. This is a large, cramped, impersonal monstrocity, more suited to a Youth Hostel, than a three star Hotel. The staff were very unhelpful, the room that I was allocated was dirty and cramped. It took a great deal of persuasion to be moved to another room. Breakfast, which is included in the rate was a over crowded buffet, where queus and congestuion are the norm. the food was cold and poorly presented. If you left your seat for more than a couple of minutes, the table would probably have been cleared and someone else sitting there.

Hostle NOT Hotel !

This has got to be one of the worst value for money hotels in London !!

Why ? ..because although the hotel itself is large the rooms are a joke...small, I have never seen a suite so small in any other hotel in the world !! Two tiny rooms ..the double bed nearly touching either side of the width of the room, the length not much more..NO bath a shower room so small you could not swing a mouse never mind a cat !!

More like a prison cell than a hotel room..more backpacker type accommodation than an hotel and for the price of £115 ( special offer ???) per night ..dreadful !! Breakfast room again like a hostel but food ok....we stayed in a Meridian Hotel on special offer for only £20 more per night for the rest of the stay..Now thats luxury !!

Excellent Location

Me and my husband stayed at St. Giles in August 2002 for 5 days. We found it unexpectedly excellent hotel for a 3 stars rating. Renovated, nice & cosy rooms + the best location for all attractions especially shopping.

Great Location

This hotel has a great location. 2 minute walk to Tube station. Across the street are a cash machine, internet cafe, pharmacy, and grocery store. Although the rooms are small, we didn't spend much time in them since there is so much to see in London.

We stayed here in July,2002. We found the rooms small, but immaculate.

We'll stay there again. It has a great location.

A thoroughly enjoyable stay!

My wife and I stayed here in January 2003 for a week long shopping, theatre and sightseeing trip, and we enjoyed ourselves bigtime! We had a reasonable budget of £75 per night - and we were lucky enough to come across londonnights.com, they were offering a standard double ensuite for £75 per night as a special offer. When you take into account the incredible position of this Hotel, just off Oxford Street, and the fact that it offers the largest indoor health and fitness centre in Central London, £75 per night is a good rate in my book. The offer also included buffet breakfast, which was fairly simple but very tasty and appreciated. Rooms are not expansive in size but comfortable and with all the facilites you need. The fitness centre is incredible, its housed within about 5 floors of the basement of the hotel, and as guests we had free use of the facilities. The pool, which is 25m long was a god-send - we dined in style every night in the west end and burned off the calories every morning in the pool and gym.Staff were courteous and knowledgeable - means a lot to us. Overall, an excellent place to stay.
