        Today the team spilt into two as there was a lot to get done. The big van went far north to visit Vratsa orphanage, Boychinovtsi Juvenile Prison and pass some boxes to Mick Cooper of Phoenix Inspire. The small van trod more familiar territory visiting orphanages in the Botevgrad area.

        Actually the first stop was an old folks home that has only been open ...

        ... already. The lady of the hotel was probably also a relic from the socialist times, but once the price negotiations were done, she showed her soft side inside her hard shell.
        If you're wondering about the many mountains, all with different names: we cannot tell one from the other on sight, but apparently geologically they are different. However, they come together in a '3-mountains-point'.

        The next day, a Tuesday, we rounded these Rila mountains. ...

        ... many kids over the years (230+ children have died in Bulgarian orphanages in the last 10 years, most simply from neglect). The buzz word now is "de-institutionalisation" which simply means orphanage closures and a shift to an adoption/foster care system. How the authorities plan to reduce child abandonment rates is not known but it seems that it is hoped that by having nowehere for kids to go families will have to keep them ...

        ... and Pepe, the manager on our arrival yesterday. Together with HoJ's residents (Niki, Ivanka, Marian, Sasho, Tsetsi and, for the summer hols only, old boy Stoyil) we were given a really warm welcome and felt at home immediately.

        ... had to celebrate the accomplishment. By the time I returned to the hotel it was a complete darkness.

        In the reception I bumped into my Italian friend. I could see the excitement on his face before I uttered a single word, I knew he has been up to something. Actually, he just returned from Musala and wanted desperately to share his achievement with me. Congratulations! I bet the views must have been better than when I was ascending the summit. A good day for us ...
