Our guide was so enthusiastic that it was almost disappointing to get back on the train for the ride to the cage. As we returned to the surface another cage was going down carrying the next tour. Lunch was in a bar in Tower. We tried to visit the local museum but it was locked up. I was able the get a few pictures of the DM&IR 1218 a 2-8-0 steam locomotive (in very bad shape). ...

... just the excuse that Henry Rowe Schoolcraft needed to travel the unfamiliar and strange lands of Itasca, Cass, Hubbard, and Beltrami counties. Schoolcraft wrote in his journals: "...our visit was of peculiar privation, fatigue and physical suffering. Not the least among these have been the calls of an unsatisfied appetite, stings of musquito, and incessant motion of travelling, depriving us due rest at night." From Schoolcraft's narratives and those of his ...
