    Highlights

Drove 100 miles in 2 hours.

    Summary

Woke up to a rainy day....third in a row. Feels like winter is coming in these parts already. Very easy scenic drive along the shores of Lake Superior to get into Duluth via Twin Ports.

Some amazing houses on the outskirts of town, located on the shore front. The lake itself is endless and may as well be an ocean.

We have spent the past three days along the largest surface area of fresh water in the world, containing 10%25 of the accessible fresh water on earth. Lake Superior is all its name implies. Early this morning we headed north, almost to the Canadian border, and set out on a boat to a remote national park. Isle Royale is a large jewel of an island set in this magnificent lake. The beginning of this new adventure for us began with saying goodbye to Duluth...and all of the material items we could stand to part with. Despite these efforts we still have too much junk. ... There were three cars to ride in on the Zephyr: a bilevel commuter car, 1950s coach car, and a 1918 heavyweight car. We rode north in the 1950s coach and back in the 1918 heavyweight. For lunch I thought Crabby Bill's sounded like a nice seafood place; wrong, it was a doughnut shop. We ate Lunch at Grandma's Bar & Grill. The car has needed an oil change for the last 1,200 miles. ...

... us into ore cars that had been converted to carry passengers. The train ride was 3/4 of a mile to the end of the mine drift. We then climbed a spiral staircase to where mining was being done when the mine ceased operation in December 1962. The next 45 minutes was spent showing us how hard rock iron mining was done from 1882 until 1962. It is very difficult to describe the working condition in the mine without actually being in a mine. It never occurred to me that you could ...
