What a City!!!!

Well, I am here. I have been here for a little longer than 24 hrs, and I feel like it has been 3 days not 3 months since I've been here. I have a lot more to do in the way of setting up this travelogue. My plan is to have it set up and ready to go by tomorrow morning. When I got to town, y train ride from the airport was uneventful (not always the case), I was asleep before my plane took off, they woke me for dinner, and then woke me after we landed, I missed the whole flight. When I got of t...

Started out as a great day - Election day

Well today I got up slow and started the day with a nice hot shower. I got lucky this time, I have a hand held shower in my room. The shower stall is the size of a coffin. In other rooms I have had at The Winston the water lines ran on the outside of the wall and the first time you bend over to wash you legs and your ass hits that hot water pipe, you want to jump forward but there is nowhere to go except through the three panel sliding shower door, that barely opens far enough for my fat ass ...

Moving Day - again....me this time

I stayed at The Winston in room 409 for the last 10 days...now I have been moved to a larger room with a bigger bed and a shower in the room. We have a private toilet but it's not in our room....This was not what I reserved and I was given the room at a Discount......I am having my girlfriend come visit for a few days....I of course am not sure how she will feel about The Winston and the neighborhood it's in so I thought the comforts of a western style hotel would be just what she needed.... ...

Thurs and Fri.

Practice makes perfect. So, Wed. night I decide to check the flight my girlfriend Jaimi was on. At this point she is well on her way, but I figure I better check the schedule just in case it's delayed or something.... LUCKY GUY!!!!! It end up I booked her on the flight that lands at 7:15 in the morning instead of the one that gets here at 9:15 in the morning, like I thought I had?...That also means that since it's midnight when I am doing this I only have about 6 hours to sleep, then HOPE my ...

Amsterdam!!

Hello!! Hey so guess what?! We're not travelling today! Yay! (by the way, this is Kristen) And I will apologize in advance for any missed letters or mispelled words, this keyboard has seen better days. We are currently in Amsterdam! What a fun, beautiful city! Yesterday we took off from Brussels around 10:15, arrived in Amsterdam via train about 3 hours later. The train ride was good, the Eurostar trains are super smooth and pretty comfortable, even though we have first class tickets and didn...

Five girls and a weekend in Amsterdam. It's snowing!

Me again. Apologies for my hastey update yesterday, my mind was on my full bladder. Woke up today to the most wonderful sight, snow in Amsterdam. You'll all see pictures when I get back, I don't feel like dealing with trying to figure out how to upload them. As I was saying, it's beautiful. Flurries really but with the canals and quaint little houses as back drops, it's fantastic. And now the sun is out. I'm loving this city, even the hustle and bustle of it. After I checked out of Passenger ...

Found ourselved slap bang in the middle of the REDLIGHT district. Boy there are so many windows displaying women of ALL shapes and sizes. Had a info day today. Visited the Ann Frank museum and the Van Gogh museum. Finished the day with a canal cruise. It has been wet and very cold today.

Good choice for young people

from ScubaSuzy
The Winston is definitely a good choice for young people who want to have a good time. The location is really close to the action, although if you are a single woman I'm not sure I'd recommend taking any of the side alleys. The room was totally passable (basic but clean) - the price was very reasonable. Also, we found the security good, some drunk girl tried to sneak in with us and they caught her right away and kicked her out. We never experienced any problems with noise.

Great hotel

Good Hotel! The staff are friendly and helpful when we first moved into our rooms we found that we couldn't latch the windows properly. We told the staff there and they immediately came and looked. However the technical guy was not around so they change the rooms for us right away. I must say that the rooms are clean and nice though abit small (typical of Dutch Hotels)

What a fantastic place!!

I've read some negative comments here which surprised me quite a lot. This place had 5/5 for me because: (1) LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!! (2) FRIENDLY!! (3) ARTY & LOTS OF CHARACTER!! (4) CLEAN + fresh towels every day & (5) GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY! Bring some earplugs, if you do need your beauty sleep, but I suggest you sleep after your holiday or on the analyst couch! I've had my 8 hours a night (or rather day.. I guess). Enjoy the great live performances in the lounge on Friday + Saturday night, plus any night in the intimate Winston International Club next door!!

I've had an absolute ball (see pics at --------------------------)

So so.....

Just come back from a weekend at the Hotel Winston - went in a group of 8 girls on a work bonding trip. Was very pleased with the location - very easy to get round the city. Rooms were basic but clean (we didn't have private toilets but used one in the hall, wasn't a problem because we were all on the same corridor so just had to share with each other). The noise was a bit annoying - the church bells ringing a tune every half hour kept waking me up on the first night. Also, our room was right next to on eof the infamous red light alleys which meant lots of shouting etc until the wee hours. Think this is fine if you're in the city for a weekend - you're not there much after all. But if you're looking for romance and peace, it probably isn't the place for you.

The Winston Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have stayed at the Winston 4 times now. We like the relaxed atmosphere, the 24 hour service, the well stocked breakfast table and the art rooms. It can be a bit noisey if your room is at the front of the building but at the side or the back it is fine.Once, when they were very busy, the reception staff spent 20 minutes on the computer sorting out the placing of reservations just so we could stay an extra night. These days we no longer shop around for accommodation unless the Winston is full. Its location is also very convenient.

Fun Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
I really liked this hotel. The majority of the rooms have an art theme, and you can pick which room you want from the website which is a nice touch. Breakfast was nice. It could be a little noisey, but nothing more than an average studetn hall. The only thing I didn't like was the proximity to a church, which every 15 minutes from aboout 7am played a jingly little tune.

Only for the alternative folk

from xtrapnel
Right. The Winston is not the place for a romantic stay. If your bed-time is before midnight, also avoid. However, if you are coming to the Dam with friends for a good time, this is your place. The bar is open till 5 every night, you can 'smoke' in the bar, it has its own night-club as well. Many rooms are mini art-installations. It is however fairly basic (hence the price) and also aimed at younger people. However, I love it and will be back next year !

Give it a miss!

from A TripAdvisor Member
The first major problem is the noise. Nowhere in Amsterdam seems quiet, but at the Winston they've made a foolish error. All the doors are self shutting, so that everytime someone leaves their room, no matter what the day or night, the doors slams. With people coming in and out 24 hours a day, it's unlikely you'll be getting any rest!

The 'art rooms' look like they've been designed by fourth form art students who've been given factory surplus paint. In mine, they'd simply framed pictures from porno mags on the walls. Very 'artistic'. There was even an expositionary note to explain the sublime intention of the piece.

The hotel had all the ambience of a dentists waiting room. Unfortunately there were no magazines to read while waiting for one's drinks.

And last, and certainly least, the security arrangements. Aside from the minor matter of handing my keys to the first guy who walked through the door (fortunately he wasn't a thief, just drunk) they've had my phone. Now whether someone took the phone from my room, or I simply left it behind I will never know, because it's been impossible to get any sensible reply from them. When I phoned in the morning they told me to call back in the afternoon. When I phoned in the afternoon they told me to call in the morning. And when I e-mailed them they told me to ask god! A direct quote: 'have you tried asking god?' Their security arrangements depend upon an interventionist deity!

I apologise for such a long review, but unless you intend on taking USAF surplus ear-plugs and padlocking all your possessions to the radiator for the duration of your stay, give it a miss!

Something different...

from A TripAdvisor Member
The Winston is a great place for people on a fun-seeking holiday. The well-kept rooms are all individually decorated by local artists, many of which are themed (eg The Heineken room represents the inside of a beer bottle). The location is great - right in the heart of the centre, and whilst some may find the proximity to the red light area a bit disconcerting, I've never felt uneasy there. The only let-down was the rude staff. There had been a mistake with our booking and we didn't have the rooms we'd requested, but the grumpy Irish man on reception didn't care at all and did nothing to help. Otherwise, I would highly recommend The Winston as a fun place to stay.
