Continuing to travel south in Belize so stopped here for a night on route to Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary...
Orange Walk, Belize ren_n_ems... temples have been properly excavated, our enthusiastic guide to the point of scary, he asked questions every few minutes just to make sure you were listening explained all about the site that goes back to 16 BC, we got to climb the tallest temple and at the summit there was an impressive view across the jungle to the nearby lagoon. Also the mask temple which contained a huge masked structure taller than me, lunch and then back up the ...
Orange Walk, Belize stevemartina... cars where driving by. The tourist feeling started.... are we getting screwed again?

Well we had to pay it... The girl at the custom was really nice, and gave us a month visa.

We started driving towards Orange Walk, a 30 minutes drive. Finally end up in a 1h30 drive. We took the wrong road and end up in a small village. People were all telling us to turn around, I guess they never saw ...
Orange Walk, Belize troispistoles... than me. So we put up with Steve burping and periodically shouting "Woo Hoo" out the window at passing cars, while I tried to sleep. Belize looked like one large, crocodile-infested swamp from the bus. That's pretty funky though - it's very different from Guatemala. The main difference was highlighted by Tom, when we arrived in Belize City. We went to the information centre, and Tom asked the woman behind the desk: "Hola. Donde esta el autobus a Orange Walk?". She leant ...

Orange Walk, Belize darkproject2... of the best examples of Mayan art have been recovered from the site and are on display in the Belize musium. The breath taking views and vistas are accessable and steps have been taken to preserve the historical site for future generations. Admission is $10 US - the fee is used to upkeep the site.
Belize City, Belize District, Belize christo58Today we left the camp and drove to the N.W. of the country through the main Mennonite settlement. These are another strong religious sect that originated in Germany; they still speak an old dialect of German. The men must always wear hats, even in bed, the ladies have to cover their hair, black if married or white if single. They have no electricity, still use horse and carts, some still use horses in the fields as ...
La Milpa, Belize mikeandmaryOn leaving Caye Caulker we decided to stop at a town called Orange Walk before we headed to Mexico. The main (well, only) reason for stopping here was to visit the Mayan ruins of Lamanai which are accessed by boat from Orange Walk. The boat journey was the highlight of the trip as we got to see crocodiles, massive iguanas and loads of different birds. As the boat arrived, our ...
Orange Walk, Belize john_and_jules... our group, and Sarah and I ended up nearly in the very back again. It was another grey, overcast day, but it was slightly warmer than it had been, and only drizzling occasionally, so the trip upriver to the Lamanai ruins was pretty nice. On the way, the Mayan guide, Wilfredo, pointed out river wildlife, mostly different types of plants and birds, with the occasional crocodile spotting that everyone missed but him. I can now identify the firework flower and the black-collared hawk. We ...
Orange Walk, Belize wktsorf... Belize standards and we are glad to have brought rain jackets. So much for fun in the sun with the wet cold front. The ruins are pretty neat, not unlike others we have seen. Not quite as excavated as say Chichen Itza is. I was not well prepared physically for this trip and the climb to the top of the temple pyramid really took it's toll. Our guide was quite knowledgeable and seemed to very much enjoy his job. He was however also quite long ...
