... one of the new seven wonders of the world.

The Hindu temples in Tamil Nadu are very different than in the north. Whether small, large or gigantic the temples have colourful bas-relief carvings in towering formations with deity heaped upon deity in appropriate hierarchy. The temple in Madurai has some 33,000 sculptures. Inside in many areas the tops of the columns and the ceilings have been recently decorated in rather incongruous and vivid patterns ...

... are behind glass and difficult to photograph. The style of the figures indicates that the current sculptors/ craftsmen are pretty true to tradition, except that earlier male figures had genitalia, whereas later figures are all Disney-modified for general viewing.

There is a good scale model of the Brihadishwara Temple, and the hall itself is highly decorated and brightly coloured. There is a statue of Serfoji II, the enlightened Maratha ...

... br> Next day I took an autorickshaw to the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam, just north of the town. It is said to be the largest temple in India, covering more than sixty hectares, and is dedicated to the god Vishnu. Temples in South India have a series of square walls built around them, like layers around an onion. The first few outer layers seemed like ordinary streets, with priests houses, people cycling off to school, and shops and ...
