Red dust and a whole new world - Welcome to India

... a form and take a seat, and the queue will move up a seat each time somebody moves up to the counter and gets served. So we filled in the form and slowly made our way up the slippery metal seats, until we finally managed to hand it in, train number and destination and required class and seats selected, to pay around 550 rupees for the privilege of a bed.

This was 10AM. We had 12 hours ahead of us, our stomachs were feeling woozy from too much curry in Malaysia, but we were ...

Magnificent Mamallapuram & Tantric Tirumala

... TTD said ‘pray’ and I was so surprised, I clasped my hands together, bowed my head and remained silent for a couple of minutes before continuing around the corner and out!! Altho’ it had only lasted seconds, I wouldn’t have missed this for anything (2 x trains @ 3.5hrs , 2 x hill @ 1hr + initial JEO visit & bus ½ hr, plus the 2hr queue for the temple = 11hrs!!). If Karl Marx was right, this was one of the most intoxicating opiates I’d ...

Temples, temples and ashrams of Tamil Nadu

... a pleasant change in the land of 1.3 billion who talk loudly and hit horns incessantly, so I savoured my 20 minutes there. I was fascinated by the devotion and obvious commitment (many guesthouses and hotels in the area are run by the ashram and most were fully booked when I asked). I bought a couple of small books about the ashram and its founder and found out it to be a vast organisation here, with an ashram information centre in town, an education centre and responsible for ...

Many A Sadhu In Tamil Nadu

... and personal with the locals. The bus has been a good way to get to know the women better too because they are usually up for a chat and you sit very close to them. I don't think there are many single white females in these parts or using the state buses in rural areas because people on the streets and at bus stops had the extreme stare bear happening, especially young girls. This is a country where it's rude not to stare and i must look very very white. I ...

Into India

... buildings, not a franchise or familiar logo in sight. Just dusty roads and brown faces. After one brief perusing in the city center, we decided to forego spending the night in this city without much to offer, and just continue on the dirty pursuit of third world travel right to Madurai, another holy pilgrimmage city en route to Kerala. A 3 hour bus journey took us through dry plains, past tall palms, bustling little villages, and roads in better state of affais than I'd expected.

Incredible India...

... give you enough time to adjust, the differences are too vast and instant to acclimate your senses. Needles to say, arrival in Trichy, short for something, was a shocker. India has the ability to overwhelm all 5 senses, the colors and smells alone are impossible to miss. The airport transfer was a breeze, most transportation networks seem to be centrally located in India, thus making it easy to get to the center of town. After trying to check into a hotel ...

Avalanche, The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu

... our binoculars before we left, we heard Prema cry out that the tiger was under a tree. What sharp eyes she has. Sure enough, there it was, sprawled majestically under a tree barely a few metres away from the calf. Perhaps the tiger had been there all along while we were up. Perhaps not, or the crows would not have come near. Nor was there any tell tale animal smell. All excited, we stayed put, eyes glued to the binocs.

<br ...

Discovering Pondicherry

Unfortunately, the agency director was sick, so we were not able to move forward in our project planning. Tomorrow is a holiday, so we are meeting again Friday morning to learn more about their needs, and in what areas the agency would like us to help. According to a staff member, Sharana is currently working on a handful of small ...
