... tiny gopuram. We had to take our shoes off again, leaving them in giant pile of sandals next to the foot wash station. We were immediately confronted by a huge flight of enclosed stairs and the meal we just had groaned in protest. Resolute we started climbing. We past a goat tethered on top of a collapsed cabinet. It smelled appropriately. A few small shrines later and we reached the rock. The claim is that this is the largest rock in the world judged on height. It is pretty ...

Coming into Chidambaram, which is a small temple town (population ...

It is said to be the largest temple in India, covering more than sixty hectares, and is dedicated to the god Vishnu. Temples in South India have a series of square walls built around them, like layers around an onion. The first few outer layers seemed like ordinary streets, with priests houses, people cycling off to school, and shops and ...

... we decided to walk rather than try another driver. It was a hot, humid, uphill venture, but we enjoyed the exercise, navigational challenge, and scenery, passing a couple of extravagant churches, some government buildings, and a cricket field along the way (cricket is the most fervently followed sport in India). The Trivandrum Zoo proved to be a highlight of our trip so far. It was a large complex with many big pens housing a wide variety of both native and foreign species in ...
