Phuket, a rainy stay

And once in Thailand....it starts raining! After arriving on that airplane with propellers, we got a a minibus that took us to our hotel and the day looks just glorious! Gorgeous beaches, gorgeous weather, and a smile on all our faces. We needed the beach more than anything. TIME TO RELAX! We made it to our hotel which we booked for decently cheap ($8.50 a person per night which is cheap in such a tourist town like this one) and when we enter the room we discover that the room is an apartment...

One month update....

... previous training in Thailand..and he's done everything possible to help me shake off the rust and he's taught me some really cool stuff as well (especially some NASTY elbow techniques). During the 2nd week... I got to know Det a bit better at the Sinbi BBQ. Just a random barbeque the gym decided to host...with lots of food...and lots of alcohol (which of course I did not partake in). Det speaks a little bit of English...but other than naming muay thai ...

Arrival in Phuket

... stop at an agency en route to see what they can sell you. In town I managed to find good digs at 660 Baht, which is cheap for high season. Then it all came flooding back, the smell of the streets, the hustle and bustle, lady boys, street walkers, old men, night markets touting copies and bars full of drunk ferangs.. It's like I'd never left.

... two guys at knife point when he went to the ATM on an empty street late at night. Scary, but I know that's a type of position I will be avoiding in the future. That day I wandered around the streets for a while. People are pretty poor there but there aren't a lot of beggers. There is constant hassle from taxi and tuk tuk drivers wanting to know where you are going. I talk to a few of them but most seem to be most interested in my ...

... new haircut, as good as the haircut he had for our wedding! He said they gave him a great head massage and then clonked him on the forehead 3 times (to wake him up maybe). Henry got a haircut as well and looked smart. The pick-up was right on time. We climb into a nice, new air-conditioned mini-van and meet another young family inside. Amanda and Scott from Glenmore Park with their kids Brock (8) and Madison (6)! The kids were excited to ...

A long weekend in Phuket, Thailand (May 3-6)

... the disaster. It didn't have an air of donation or charity about it, they felt to me like they were just profiting off things that tourists would buy. I'm not sure how much city-planning or over-all plan was put into the reconstruction of this town, but I didn't see anything here that wasn't aggressively and exclusively constructed toward the tourists trade. It was sad to me to see the culture and climate of ...

... the judicial equivalent of purgatory and then afterwards go out and look for a job while still dressed in societies uniform, or as I call a suit and tie, the monkey suit. On the day I was due in court for my big fat serving of criminal justice, I woke with a blistering hangover from the last few nights of drinking and drugging. Hangover or not, I still had to get my ass moving so I wouldn't be late for my date with the judge. The courts ...

A Word From Patong

... the waterfront, but then to have gone only a short way inland to find everything as it should be with not even so much as a blade of grass out of place. I also have heard some stories from some of the other people that were on the boats during the tsunami. They are also reinforcing to us that we're getting to experience Thailand as it was maybe 20 years ago before the Western world all got wind of this being a nice place to holiday in. We all feel somewhat bad about the fact that we ...
