Alabama's hidden gem?

Who knew I'd enjoy Montgomery, AL as much as I did...

It all began when we pulled into our hotel. I've come to expect a very standard room by now, but when we got to our floor and opened the door, I was pleasantly greeted by a really nice room. They had recently renovated the hotel, and clearly hired some sort of Feng Shui decorator. I loved it. Everything was crisp and clean, but with warm touches ...

Montgomery History Tour

... from out of town come join us. It was as if we were on some kind of educational VIP tour when we found out that Morris Dees, one of the co-founders of the Southern Poverty Law Center, was going to be joining us along with his wife, artist Susan Starr. What an opportunity to meet these two bigger than life people. They were both down to earth, friendly and full of life. Once again Marney, thank you for an incredible experience.

Andy and I just gotta come back here to experience in full the "Glen Thistle" Farm life in in all its glory!!
That night Young and Suzy took us out to one of their favorite haunts. An Italian restaurant with a relaxed family atmosphere and the greatest pizza ever. Daughter Georgia and her husband, Dustin joined us for a delicious and fun filled dinner. Georgia works as a teacher as she completes her Masters degree and ...

... visit, I have separated the entries into three parts; "Marney", "Suzy and Young", and "The History Tour of Montgomery".

We arrived at Gunter Hill State Park in time to set up in the rain, eat dinner and fall asleep. The next day was rainy and cold as I did laundry, cleaned Crazy Fish and checked out the campgrounds. The sun peeked in and out as I took pix of the Alabama River right behind our site and got carried away with pictures of the Halloween ...

Getting soaked in Montgomery

... on a two lane road at the time and didn't want to take any chances. I pulled over into a closed gas station that had an over hang that looked like it was about to fall over. At the moment it was all I had to take cover.

I rode until about 830pm local time and headed up getting a hotel in Meridian, Miss. Its a tiny town with a lot of hotels. I took my time this morning. In fact I slept in until about 10am. After a 15 hour day I really needed the sleep.

... her to willingly join us in the water. So that meant I had to pull her in. This was not an easy task and she scurried out as quickly as she could.

In the afternoon, my cousin Frankie saddled up some of the horses and Alex got to go for a little ride. Then there was more swimming and even time to hold one of Uncle D's new baby ducks...a father's day gift from his daughters.

We had a very peaceful and relaxing visit and can't wait to go back again.

Out in the Middle of Nowhere

... Oreo cookie and cream cheese balls dipped in chocolate...decadence. While Jackie was cooking, we walked down to the barn so Alex could help feed the horses. Tori & Bella were very intrigued with these new creatures and weren't quite sure how to approach them. It was a funny site.

Days 26-27

Rob Troke entry: Day 26, May 28th Ted's driving experience begins. We practice in the parking lot of a Publix and then head for the highway out of Florida. Ted's got the hang of it I think. We drive into southwestern Georgia and stop for dinner at Moby *****, an isolated Country Cooking place along the highway (19 miles south of Blakely). A nice, very southern, old but energetic guy walking to his car noticed our NJ plates and came ...

One of the other main "events" that is recalled is the voting rights march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965: 'when Jimmie Lee Jackson was show and killed by Alabama state troopers on February 26, 1965, angry protesters wanted to march to Montgomery to confront Governor Wallace. On March 7, they embarked on a peaceful march from Selma to the state Capitol ...
