Just a Few Things to See in Alaska

I love Alaska, make no mistake about it. I have gone there for the past several years to enjoy the sites and people. I also make the trek in the late winter to enjoy the hiking possibilities in the solitude of the winter snow. Oh, and the distant moose encounters every now and then. This year, after careful study, I chose this particular time because the moon did not interfere with the late niht skies and the aurora forecast (http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraFore cast/) called for some activ...

First Full Day in Alaska

... her office and meet some of the people she worked with all summer. We watched the Aurora Borealis movie while there. From there we took a well deserved nap. Homemade dinner by Christina tonight. We are planning on going to the visitor's center tonight and out for ice cream. Probably another stop at Fred Meyers for more food.

Alaska at last

... are both chefs. They have a cafe and bake. Entertainment nightly but especially when a caravan or tour group comes by. The fact that they are contracted for both is an indicator that this is a good place. Great people.

Travel today was relatively easy and quick. From Destruction Bay to just pass the border the highway has a lot of frost heave. Very rough.

Europe Visual Packing List

... through Heathrow and our checked baggage has a much higher chance of getting lost than usual, we will be going carry-on only. One bag and one personal item each. Being a huge black Samsonite girl prior to this or a wheelie bag toting carry-on girl for weekend trips, this presented a challenge. My rolly-bag totally unpacked weighs close to 7 pounds. I love it to death. With 4 wheels I can push it down the aisle in front of me, run ...

Meet the Alaska Team 2008!

... I am working for Princess Tours, and in the fall I will return to my job with the School District. I graduated from the University of Alaska in 2007 with a degree in Elementary Education, and am pursuing a full-time teaching position. At our church, I volunteer as a pre-school teacher and also a middle-school youth-group leader. I have always enjoyed working with children, and I love to travel and be in the ...

Moose Thangs!

... wasn't sure what I meant!) The thought process went along the lines of..........."hmmmm antlers......no,horns...... no, what are they called i wonder? Oh well moose thangs sounds good!" We now know they in fact called a rack, as in "check out the rack on that moose!" but we will forever more refer to them as moose thangs! So on our way home from another moose sighting we yet again touched on the subject of moose ...

Black Friday

... done before (with the exception of the rides to Fred Meyers on the last trip up). After a free hat at Sportmen's Outfitters, we try to beat the rush at Old Navy and a shoe store, but it is no use. The crowds have already ravaged the place making it close to impossible to even turn around. The Chilis restaurant was no exception. I had to solice myself to a long drive in the places where people do not stir in Alaska in the winter--parks and pipelines.

... pretty mountains from the Knik River Bridge, about 10 miles from Wasilla now. Wasilla is nothing to write home about. It's a smaller town, the one that our new (female) Governor Sarah Palin hails from. Wasilla is also the seat for the Mat-Su borough... (we don't have counties in Alaska, we have boroughs... like New York City!) Basically, though, Wasilla is a white ...

Quick and Dirty (Kinko's aint cheap!)

... Yukon Things I did on the way from Whitehorse: 1. Stopped at Mendenhall Landing for a view of the rivers and to check out a small cliffside cemetery. 2. Visited the former townsite of Champagne. This town was pretty much abandoned by 1992. There are still a couple of residents so it's not an official ghost town yet. Definitely worth the side-trip just to see one person's collection of hubcap totem poles. Haines Junction is the entranceway into Kluane National Park ...
