    ... at its peak, and it was very lucrative for hunters, who then came into town with their pockets loaded with cash, looking for a good time. Within that decade, the buffalo herds were all but depleted in the region-- millions were killed. After this, the city went into decline.     ... De Cristo Mnt range and there are two rivers that surround the dunes that converge. As winds blow the sand towards the mountains the rivers bring it back down and if you stand in one of the rivers it feels like you are at the ocean. As the river brings the sand back down it builds up in the river like a dam and then the dam breaks (every 20-30 seconds) and water surges (like waves)and with those surges your feet get buried, like at the ocean.
