Stopover in Bavaria

Last night we drove, and drove, and drove. We were hoping to stop in Munich so we could do a brief sightseeing tour in the morning, but it was impossible to find a hotel. We were told to drive far out of the city if we wanted to get a room. So we continued on until we finally got to Augsburg, where we managed to get two rooms in one of the two Ibis hotels. This morning we walked to the Old Town ...

Sunday, day 5

... Danube Canal runs just outside the walls.

nothing was open today, being sunday, but we enjoyed exploring the wall and the tiny houses and streets within. unfortunately, there are no plaques or signs explaining details of these historic buildings and towns. we are on our own to learn and discover more, but finding information on line has been difficult.

Legoland

Today we visited Legoland Deutschland.
The lighthearted amusement park made an interesting counterpoint to the Dachau concentration camp of yestereday.
Another counterpoint to Munich had to do with the price. Family admission to Deutsches Museum, maybe the most fabulous museum on Earth aside from the Smithsonian: 17 Euros. Family admission to Legoland, a mediocre amusement park: 160 Euros.
Anyway, we had a great time ...

Augsburg - Day 2 (Amy's photos)

... over and down the road a bit. This was a proper cathedral as they had real candles with actual flames (most touristy churches/cathedrals) have now changed over to electric ones where you can insert your 10->50 cents to light one and make a prayer. The real candles look better. Spent the afternoon walking, talking, relaxing, checking internet again.

Travel to Augsburg - Day 1 (Amy's photos)

... a few clashes of thunders. It was quite an experience for us because it was only the second time we have experience a thunderstorm since leaving Australia. The other time was in New York last year! Augsburg is quite small and our hotel was not even a five minute walk from the station. We settled in to our nice hotel room before ...

Day trip to Dachau, concentration camp

Today we woke up later than usual and had some bread from a bakery. Then we went to Dachau , where is located near Munich. It was sunny and hot. We took a train to Dachau Station and took a bus from there. Dachau Concentration Camp is famous for the first camp which was built and used for the longest time. The museum was very informative. I leaned about the history a lot. The site was ...

OKTOBERFEST 2005!!!!!

... what was the last available table in the Paulaner tent so we jumped at the chance, and took it. The opening ceremony did not begin until 12 and therefore the first beer stein was not poured until 12 either. We just sat and played cards until drinking time arrived. We ended up sitting with a lovely group of Germans who we chatted to all day. They taught us things about Germany, we learnt words like "Prost" (Cheers) and they taught us little sayings and songs. It really ...
