      ... on the backs of the steel and coalmining industry and the Ruhr was at the forefront of the economic boom. When it ended in the early 90’s, coal production collapsed and the mines closed, leading to mass unemployment from which Gelsenkirchen has yet to fully recover. It remains a depressing area to be in and I’m not saying anything new here, the Germans know it too.

      This morning some of us went on a bus/boat/walking tour of Amsterdam. Jet lag caught up with Anne and she was not able to come. I had forgotten how beautiful the old city of Amsterdam is, and it was very different seeing it from touring along the canals. I didn't realise how many houseboats there are lining the canals. Our guide said that they only pay mooring fees of €1,000 per year but ...

      ... want to stay longer in Brasil to experience the Amazonas, there are lot of farms with wwoofing, so I might gonna do that.
      I too want to stay in Costa Rica for a while, and I will definitly be in the Carribean Sea working on the boats there to get from isle to isle.
      In North America I am still not sure, but I do like Vancouver in Canada, for the opportunity to see some whales up there.
      Indonesia will be the country I want to stay ...

      ... in circles trying to get me back on but we were having no joy so we had to take a bit of a detour. Not exactly what we wanted on such a long drive. Again we got back on track and there was just time enough for one more missed turning before we eventually made it to the campsite at about 4.30 so it had been a long day.
