    Spine tingling Ypres

From beautiful Brugge we drove south west to Ypres. Along the way we stopped at some of the war memorials to the fallen soldiers. All this area is part of Flanders. We stopped at the Tyne Cot cemetery. It is the biggest commonwealth memorial. It was quite surreal looking at the walls knowing every name on the wall represents a soldier whose body was never found or identified.
    Next we stopped at ...

Through Brugge to the North Sea ( in the rain)

... And indeed these offer a more authentic and peaceful experience. Anyway, after an off and on rainy day, I did my Brugge thing, then continued to the coast to camp for the night. Yes, after 5000+ km I've returned to the North Sea. Tomorrow, I will cross into France and take the 12pm ferry from Dunkerque (Dunkirk) to Dover in the UK. Happy Birthday Cooper!!!! Today we did our first training session in the North Sea we had to get our boat out of the container that it came over in from Australia. We had to sail out through a 2 km channel to get out to the North Sea. The currents and tides are so different here than at home, also you can't see any land, so this makes it hard to have a land mark at the start of the races. We trained until 5:30 and ...

Today we did something different. We caught the train - on time - BEFORE spending nearly four hours waiting at the station. I went to Amiens station yesterday to book our tickets to Bruges today and then from Bruges to Charles de Gaulle airport on Thursday. But the lady at the station spoke limited English, so I thought I'd leave the last tickets until we got to Bruges. The lady told me trains left Amiens for Bruges every hour - 6.37am, 7.37am, 8.37am, etc - and the journey ...

Visiting Bruges is like visiting your Gran's house. Both areas have maintained a certain standard of old fashioned charm despite threat from more recent ideas of beauty. Granted one is your aunt who despises Gran's choice of decor whilst the other is a complete range of artistic movements throughout history. But still. Just like Gran's fox related nic-nak's Bruges' architecture hasn't really changed since the nineteenth century and it doesn't need to. You enjoy ...
