And Even Further North...

From Iceland I flew to Oslo and spent the night at the airport hotel. Nothing special, but easy. On Sunday I flew to Longyearbyen which is the main settlement on the Island of Svalbard above the Arctic Circle. It was a beautiful day and at one point the pilot announced that we were passing by Bear Island and that this was one of the very few times it has been clear enough that he has seen the island. And as we were coming into Longyearbyen I had beautiful views of glaciers, lakes and fjords. ...

Longyearbreen glacier walk...

***For some reason Svalbard isn't on the TravelPod map, but rest assured it's between the northern most point of Norway and the North Pole (which is a mere 600 miles away)*** I checked in at Tromso's airport a good 6 hours before my 11.50pm flight in order to ensure that I got a window seat. The Lonely Planet describes the descent to Longyearbyen, the main settlement in Svalbard, as "otherworldly" provided the weather's clear. Unfortunately it was quite cloudy for me, but there were enough ga...

These were the cheapest at 1 pound a bottle, and the cheapest that we have found so far. We also went for one more walk, but again no luck.

A nice and early start for our journey towards Boden, where we stayed the night before carrying onto Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland!

... Paris of the North". Various versions of how this nickname came to be have become imbedded in the mythology of Tromso. The most romantic seems to be that the fine women folk of the town wore finery that was the envy of the north, and every bit as fine as the fashions of Paris. But, pick your poison to continue on a theme.

Tromso is linked to the mainland by a well designed bridge measuring 1,016 metres. Samaan aikaan aurinko oli laskemassa ja tuli räpsäistyä muutama kuvasta upeasta maisemasta, jossa Kilpisjärvi kylpee punaisessa valossa Saana takanaan... It cost a measly £40 and involved an outward bus journey through the Lyngen Alps, and a return journey aboard the luxurious (and normally very expensive) Hurtigruten, a large cruise liner that sails up and down Norway's west coast.
