... Hotel Napoli was quite nice.

After some rest, we walked over to the Piazza del Plebiscito (a large public square in central Naples) to meet up with our guide for a 3-hour walking tour of Naples. Surprisingly, the city was a lot grimier than I expected. The streets were littered with trash and most of the buildings were tagged with graffiti.

We decided to take in the spectacular views of the Amalfi Coast and discover the history of the infamous Pompeii ruins - both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. We left the Port of Naples and on our drive along the famed Amalfi Coast, we enjoyed breathtaking views of sparkling blue sea, citrus orchards, olive groves and little villages nestled along secluded bays and terraced into hillsides. A stop was made at the picturesque village of Amalfi so that we ...

Another early start (meeting time 7:15am) for the full day tour of Pompeii, Sorrento and Capri. Reaching Pompeii after the short coach drive through Naples, we visited a cameo factory, located in the Hotel Victoria. Quite an astonishing handicraft, where artisans carve seashell or coral into intricate pieces of jewellery.

No tour of Pompeii is long enough and this proved the case again today. Arriving before the crowds ...

... t pushed in fully & the windscreen shattered. He just drove away with a shrug. Ahhh Italy!!
The bus arrived an hour late and we headed up to Vesuvius. It was a bit of a hairy drive with hairpin bends where he honked his horn in warning and at other times having to pass tourist buses when there was inches to spare (as well as a car that the people had hopped out of to take a photo of the expansive view to Naples but not really in a spot that left much room). It ...

Mosaics of Pompeii - Day 36

... lunch. Napoli still has a huge problem with rubbish - it is everywhere. The streets are a mess but nobody seems to care. Graffiti is everywhere too - even on ancient buildings which is a huge shame. Apart from that, I like the city. I feel safe ( during the day time at least, but I wouldn't walk down a lane at night!) and you just have to remember to stay close to the buildings in the the lane ways, because cars and motor bikes speed down ...
