    ... next few days would be spent camping on an island in the Linnansaaren National Park. We were very fortunate to enjoy a cruise on a Finnish scouting ship right around sunrise so the views of the sun setting across the lakes and islands were just breath taking!     ... located on an island, which made it even nicer. Savonlinna is also located on several lakes. It's a city of 30,000 people or so and if there weather was nicer, I would have loved to go on a lake cruise, but it poured down rain all day. The lake cruises are only 10 euros and last about 2 hours, so in the future if I come back, I would like to do a cruise ...

    ... an hour before the park closed. we raced around looking at the otters and other caged critters like ferrets and stoats, then moved on to the owls, which there were a lot of. the snowy old was pretty cool, and the golden eagles were huge. next up was the fun part- the polar bears, brown bears and lynx. unfortunatly, the polar bears were asleep, and try as we could, we didnt see the brown bears anywhere. the lynx was ...

    ... soundproof so with only very small windows we didn't see the spectacular lightning display nor hear the winds. Power was lost during the storm to thousands of homes and the locals could not remember experiencing a storm like it. This was enough to halt our dreams of a canoe trip as trees had fallen over the more narrow sections of waterways making it impassable. However a blessing in the morning - a beautiful clear day!

    We took side roads to Imatra from Lapeenranta through the country side and followed the Saimaa Canal for a short distance. At one section after the canal we came across a huge gas complex in the middle of farming country and soon after were very close to the border where by the side of the road there was a sign to stop and not go any further.
