... next few days would be spent camping on an island in the Linnansaaren National Park. We were very fortunate to enjoy a cruise on a Finnish scouting ship right around sunrise so the views of the sun setting across the lakes and islands were just breath taking! It was a short but rocky walk from the very basic quay to the camp ground but all part of the back to basics natural Finland experience! ...

... located on an island, which made it even nicer. Savonlinna is also located on several lakes. Power was lost during the storm to thousands of homes and the locals could not remember experiencing a storm like it. This was enough to halt our dreams of a canoe trip as trees had fallen over the more narrow sections of waterways making it impassable. However a blessing in the morning - a beautiful clear day!

We took side roads to Imatra from Lapeenranta through the country side and followed the Saimaa Canal for a short distance. At one section after the canal we came across a huge gas complex in the middle of farming country and soon after were very close to the border where by the side of the road there was a sign to stop and not go any further. It was right on the border of no-mans land and Katrina now has a "hinku" to go over the border into ...
