... to sit at the bar to drink and chat with the locals.
As we're waiting for our drinks and food (it's quite a wait) another customer turns up with a couple of kids. We can't help commenting on the fact that the boy starts to clamber across the rocks below. It's obviously dangerous but his father doesn't seem to be concerned so we try, with difficulty, not to be either.
Eventually our starters arrive. Now for the big test are these fish ...
... dock. As I looked down I noticed our dock ropes were tied up with the deck ropes of the cruise ship that was docked behind us. Getting ropes untangled and getting away from the dock took an extra 30 minutes. We were to have departed at 17:00, but we did not actually get underway until about 17:30. Regardless, it was amazing watching the huge cruise ship maneuver away from the dock and out to open waters.
We were all surprised ...
... six months ago. I had done copious amounts of research for the trip and braced myself for the worst. My experience in Kenya was incredible, but that may have been due to a sort of "bubble" that all of the delegates were placed in for the duration of the International Gold Event.
Here, there is no internationally guided "bubble" to shield me; no buffer zone between myself and the "real world" - just me, my wits and my determination to see this through.
... Thats when it started to go downhill, just as we noticed the sign saying car rental returns on the other side of the road. Not a problem you might think, but given six lanes or so in either direction and flyovers going here there and everywhere no such thing as a U turn now. Well now there are signs everywhere, apart of course from the ones I needed. Ah another sign saying Car rentals but just missed it again, ended up trying to go in ...
... is not much of a description of the island, but hey, we were on a cruise, only so much time. We did spend sometime walking the the streets in downtown Bridgetown, because my Wife and I believe you can't say you've been anywhere until you get lost walking through side streets and seeing the local neighborhoods and shops(not malls, LOCAL stores). It was cool, well kept, and architecturally very pretty- lots of ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Southern Surf Beach Apartments Christ Church
My husband and I stayed at the Southern Surf Beach Apartments from April 7th to April 10th, 2005 and had a wonderful and very positive experience. This is the place you want to stay if it is your first visit to Barbados. Not only are the rates very reasonable, they're located just across the street from the nicest beach in Barbados (Accra/Rockley).
My fiance and I were lucky enough to find the Southern Surf Hotel when we were planning our wedding in Barbados. It was a rather daunting task to plan a wedding entirely via email but everything turned out perfectly.
Enjoyed our stay!
This was our first time in Barbados and were very pleased with the Southern Surf. If you want clean accomodation, a good location and a reasonable price then this is the place! The owners and staff were really friendly and helped us with eveything we needed. Rockley beach (very nice beach) is right across the street and the hotel pool is in a quiet area in back. Restaurants, shops and a grocery store are just a short walk.
This was our first vacation with our three month old baby. Everything about this place was perfect. Accomodations were comfortable and convenient. The studios are spacious and clean. The kitchen comes fully equiped, there is an AC, cable TV and beach towels are provided. The location is very central, we walked to the grocery store, restaurants, St. Lawrence Gap, Bus stop, and the best part was, we had a view of the beach from our balcony (across the street). The host Derrick was so helpful throughout our stay, he even brought in his own stroller to make life easier for our baby. You can catch the bus to practically everywhere from here. Southern Surf made our trip to Barbados very memorable not just for us, but also for our baby! It was like having our own apartment with all the conveniences of a hotel, and more! We highly recommend it.
Southern Surf reasonable, clean and a perfect place to stay
This great little retreat has it all. Excellent location, friendly, family-oriented staff that soon adopt you. This is new management for those of you who may have been here years ago. They are turning it into what we all want. Super clean and tidy little efficiency units with all you need. Balconies all overlooking the "quieter" end of Rockley Beach.
Security guard in evenings keeps things safe and quiet at night.
Excellent location close to bus stop for trips to Bridgetown or into Oistens for some fun on Friday nights and for any hockey fans close to Bert's Bar for banana daquiris and to catch a hockey game. Also within walking distance of many restaurants and other conveniences. An ideal location for some time in the sunshine. We loved it!
Affordable and on a great beach!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Southern Surf. It is right across the road from beautiful Rockley Beach. Our room as neat and clean -- a bit spartan, but perfect for a beach holiday. Plenty of storage space, good kitchenette, bath and balcony overlooking the sea. A/C worked but ocean breezes kept the room cool enough most of the time. It was safe to walk at night to local restaurants and there was always plenty of buses and taxis. The staff was very helpful in arranging tours. A nice private garden pool with fresh water too.
Considering that Barbados is quite expensive, we opted to stay here. It was Perfect. The price is right and the staff is wonderful. They were always helpful and very friendly. The location is ideal, right across from Accra/Rockley beach. If you need to get around town, the bus stops right infront of the apartment. Cabs are always passing by as well. The room was clean, the kitchen had all the essentials. The Big B supermarket provides a shuttle if you need to get grocerys, but there is another supermarket within walking distance.Chefette is steps away. There was a security guard on watch at night which made us feel secure. We plan to go back.
Perfect location, great price, great beach, best deal
Perfect for saving some cash. Perect location, the room is basic but you cant get a better location for the price. If you dont mind average accomodation with perfect location go here! Beach is perfect, you cant get a better locale. Nightlife is less than 5$ US away by cab and the beach is a 1 min walk. MY buddy and I thought it was perfect.
Good, cheap, clean
Barbados isn't the cheapest place to stay, and affordable accommodations can be grisly. We spent 3 weeks at the Southern Surf, and would stay again. Rooms were clean, air conditioning worked, views from room were good, and the very good Accra Beach was right across the street. It's not a party place (mostly families and people who come year after year for longish stays), but south coast bars are not that far away. The little kitchenettes are great, especially since there's a huge good supermarket (Big B) within walking distance. It's right on the south coast road, so there's a fair bit of traffic, but the upside of that is that buses into town, to the airport and Sam Lord's, and even to the west coast, stop nearby.
