Looking for the Perfect place to stay? Look no further!
My husband and I stayed at the Southern Surf Beach Apartments from April 7th to April 10th, 2005 and had a wonderful and very positive experience. This is the place you want to stay if it is your first visit to Barbados. Not only are the rates very reasonable, they're located just across the street from the nicest beach in Barbados (Accra/Rockley).
The Apartments are absolutely fabulous. They're extremely clean and well maintained. The staff were exceptionally polite and accommodating. Although there are not personal phones in each room, the staff leant us a cell phone for free and even sold us the calling card to use it. There was also a safe available in the room so that we could lock up our valuables.
I suffer from health problems with walking and a poor back. The staff set us up in a wonderful room on the main level so that I wouldn't have to take the stairs. The staff even enquired to see if the mattress was OK for my back and that I was sleeping well.
Although there are only 14 Apartments, it's really enjoyable as the staff provide personalized attention to each and every guest. The buildings are on a busy street (quiets down at night), however, it's not a heavy traveled highway. Southern Surf is close to everything. Just a short cab ride to Bridgetown. If requested, the staff will even arrange tours and activities at the front desk
My husband and I look forward to a return visit to the Southern Surf Beach Apartments.
My fiance and I were lucky enough to find the Southern Surf Hotel when we were planning our wedding in Barbados. It was a rather daunting task to plan a wedding entirely via email but everything turned out perfectly.
The hotel staff went above and beyond the call of duty. They arranged rooms for all of our family and friends from Canada, Mexico, and the U.K. We were travelling with our two small children and I was pleasantly surprised to find a real crib and bedding upon our arrival for our infant son.
The hotel is located on a rather busy road, but it is right across from the beach. The rooms are spacious and spotlessly clean and come complete with a well stocked kitchen. The pool area is very private and well kept. The hotel itself is near restaurants, shopping, grocery stores, banks etc. and it is a short cab ride or walk to St. Lawrence Gap. The beach across the street is lovely and not too heavily populated.
I cannot say enough about the staff. They helped arrange transport to and from our wedding venue, flower delivery, and a catamaran trip as well as many other requests. Also they provided cell phones for us to use while we were staying with them and have internet services in the office. They even left a lovely fruit basket in the room for us the night of our wedding. I broke my foot while I was there and the Hotel Manager actually provided me with her granny's walker to help me get around. Now that is service!
The maids are super friendly and fastidious. I have never stayed in a cleaner place. We had actually booked a different hotel for our second week on the other side of the island but after one night there we packed up and moved back to the Southern Surf.
If you are looking for a five star experience but are on a budget, you cannot do any better than the Southern Surf. All of our family and friends raved about the place. We will definitely stay with them on our next visit.
Enjoyed our stay!
This was our first time in Barbados and were very pleased with the Southern Surf. If you want clean accomodation, a good location and a reasonable price then this is the place! The owners and staff were really friendly and helped us with eveything we needed. Rockley beach (very nice beach) is right across the street and the hotel pool is in a quiet area in back. Restaurants, shops and a grocery store are just a short walk.
Worth every penny
This was our first vacation with our three month old baby. Everything about this place was perfect. Accomodations were comfortable and convenient. The studios are spacious and clean. The kitchen comes fully equiped, there is an AC, cable TV and beach towels are provided. The location is very central, we walked to the grocery store, restaurants, St. Lawrence Gap, Bus stop, and the best part was, we had a view of the beach from our balcony (across the street). The host Derrick was so helpful throughout our stay, he even brought in his own stroller to make life easier for our baby. You can catch the bus to practically everywhere from here. Southern Surf made our trip to Barbados very memorable not just for us, but also for our baby! It was like having our own apartment with all the conveniences of a hotel, and more! We highly recommend it.
Southern Surf reasonable, clean and a perfect place to stay
This great little retreat has it all. Excellent location, friendly, family-oriented staff that soon adopt you. This is new management for those of you who may have been here years ago. They are turning it into what we all want. Super clean and tidy little efficiency units with all you need. Balconies all overlooking the "quieter" end of Rockley Beach.
Security guard in evenings keeps things safe and quiet at night.
Excellent location close to bus stop for trips to Bridgetown or into Oistens for some fun on Friday nights and for any hockey fans close to Bert's Bar for banana daquiris and to catch a hockey game. Also within walking distance of many restaurants and other conveniences. An ideal location for some time in the sunshine. We loved it!
Affordable and on a great beach!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Southern Surf. It is right across the road from beautiful Rockley Beach. Our room as neat and clean -- a bit spartan, but perfect for a beach holiday. Plenty of storage space, good kitchenette, bath and balcony overlooking the sea. A/C worked but ocean breezes kept the room cool enough most of the time. It was safe to walk at night to local restaurants and there was always plenty of buses and taxis. The staff was very helpful in arranging tours. A nice private garden pool with fresh water too.
Considering that Barbados is quite expensive, we opted to stay here. It was Perfect. The price is right and the staff is wonderful. They were always helpful and very friendly. The location is ideal, right across from Accra/Rockley beach. If you need to get around town, the bus stops right infront of the apartment. Cabs are always passing by as well. The room was clean, the kitchen had all the essentials. The Big B supermarket provides a shuttle if you need to get grocerys, but there is another supermarket within walking distance.Chefette is steps away. There was a security guard on watch at night which made us feel secure. We plan to go back.
Perfect location, great price, great beach, best deal
Perfect for saving some cash. Perect location, the room is basic but you cant get a better location for the price. If you dont mind average accomodation with perfect location go here! Beach is perfect, you cant get a better locale. Nightlife is less than 5$ US away by cab and the beach is a 1 min walk. MY buddy and I thought it was perfect.
Good, cheap, clean
Barbados isn't the cheapest place to stay, and affordable accommodations can be grisly. We spent 3 weeks at the Southern Surf, and would stay again. Rooms were clean, air conditioning worked, views from room were good, and the very good Accra Beach was right across the street. It's not a party place (mostly families and people who come year after year for longish stays), but south coast bars are not that far away. The little kitchenettes are great, especially since there's a huge good supermarket (Big B) within walking distance. It's right on the south coast road, so there's a fair bit of traffic, but the upside of that is that buses into town, to the airport and Sam Lord's, and even to the west coast, stop nearby.

... I was a little hesitant about this. Barbados follows the same driving rules as England so you have to drive on the left side of the road and the driver sits on the right!
All of the cars here are on the small side so we jammed the 5 of us, our 5 suitcases and carry on bags into a Toyota Yaris! Rob is doing the driving since he has experience with driving on the left. Now I know what some of you are thinking, he only has one ...
... so I decided to eat at a little cafe. They had burgers and chicken, like any cafe, but they had a few extra menu items that I don't see very often: iguana and ostrich. I decided I just had to try one of these, even if I hated it. So about 15 minutes later I'm sitting down with a fresh plate of iguana, and I'm sure it was very fresh, because they're always running around the island. To be honest, it really didn't taste bad, and it was ...
... Thats when it started to go downhill, just as we noticed the sign saying car rental returns on the other side of the road. Not a problem you might think, but given six lanes or so in either direction and flyovers going here there and everywhere no such thing as a U turn now. Well now there are signs everywhere, apart of course from the ones I needed. Ah another sign saying Car rentals but just missed it again, ended up trying to go in ...
... but the Sunderland fans went off to lunch very happy with that final score. :-)
We spent the rest of the day pottering around the ship, watching the birds and flying fish, and enjoying some cold beer and cocktails. Tonight was the Captain's Gala Party and was a formal evening, so we had to be ready at 5.30pm which is a bit on the early side to be attired in formal wear, but that's the way it goes.

... just to slow the boat down as she surfed down some quite big breaking seas. Top speed was 13.3 kts down one rather large wave.
Our watch system was 2 hours on and 6 off so it was a realitively easy run having four of us on board. We were in daily contact with some 30 odd boats around us, both ahead and behind, each giving their positions and weather. One boat behind us lost their rudder and ...
