... and it should be another ten minutes. Eventually, after nearly two hours, the immigration officer reappears with our passports and visas including a beautiful coloured visa with our photos inserted in our passports. We decide that the whole experience, while frustrating, was worth the cost of the visa as it gave us a real taste of third world Africa officialdom with lots of staff standing around doing nothing and yet everything takes forever. It seems that the ...

... friendly and made the process easy for us. So currently we are in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. Our hotel is a ferry ride across to the other side of the port, allowing us some beautiful views of the city. Not far away is the IRON House (Casa Do Ferro) built of iron by Gustav Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame, in the 19th century for the colonial Governor’s Mansion, but the climate was not suited to a heat conducting building so ...

... border, and on my left was a very wide "sidewalk" for people (mostly African women) making their way across on foot to Moçambique. The sun was bearing down on us foot travellers and I couldn't see the end of the long stretch of concrete pavement (André thinks it was about 500 m). Mindful that we needed to cross the pavement, find some place to apply for the visas, get them, and then make it to the bus again, I was really tempted to run across the border... but then I figured ...
