The return to South Africa

Upon our return to South Africa we found ourselves on our own again, this time in Durban. Despite the fact that we were staying in the 'Southern Sun' Hotel, it was raining heavily (You wonder why we wear our raincoats in every photo). The following day we were met by a familiar, friendly face. Andrew who we met on the Western Australia tour was home for a few weeks for Christmas and kindly offered to show us a bit of his home country. First stop his parents house in Pietermaritzberg, about an...

... an African would be someone indiginous to the country here, so basically blacks and coloreds, which btw it is ok to call people here their color. It isn't rude or offensive like it can be in the states.
Anyways we began by the beach then took a drive up to the wetlands where I saw beautiful plants and way too many bugs. Afterwards we went to the mangrove forest which was really cool. they are ...

Walking around the City

I got up at 9 today which bloody great considering I had been up so early the previous 2 mornings. I could not have a shower though as there were loads of school kids getting ready so I just decided to head into town. I did not have a great impression of Durban because of the hostel, its staff (just that one useless girl actually, the rest were fine) and the area it was in. As I left with my bag, which had all my valuables as I did not want to leave them in the hostel ...

Not a great first impression

... we had Joshua from the Congo; he did not speak French but was saying that they have 450 different dialects there. Just before we set off every driver give us a little speech about the times and what's going to happen on the way. Joshua told us I quote "We have a 2 hour drive nonstop, I can stop for toilet but not for smoking unless it is weed!" Everyone sort of laughed but I think he was not joking at all. He ...

Durban, the cultural melting pot

... in a 'safe' area so we started walking quickly in the direction of city hall and thankfully found the Durban museum of natural science.
We killed a couple of hours at the museum and then went strolling in the direction of the tourist office, after a bit of panicked walking around we eventually found it. We booked a cultural walk for the next day and then asked for directions to where we could get a minibus taxi back out to the suburb where our hostel is. Outside we were ...

... birds (a kite that knows that Andre will feed him). Even snakes. There is one that he knows lives in the rafters. We are assured that it's nothing to be afraid of. Andre shows off a snake skin hanging from the rafters. We are not assured, however. The rest of the day was spent doing very little except enjoying each other's company.

Culture and History from the Garden Route

... to do so during a prior business trip to Cape Town in Jan. 2000. Unfortunately, I just didn't have enough time before I had to return the rental car at the airport and catch my flight back to Durban. For most of Robben Island's recorded history, the island has served as a place of confinement for early slaves, convicts, lepers, and the mentally unstable. In 1961, it became a ...

... took a good 20mins for the gecko to get the thing past it gullet and into it's digestive tract ... sometime later though, the same gecko shat a legion of baby cockroaches. My knowledge of gecko physiology is limited but it seems unfeasible, and for several weeks there were a range of speculative stories by those who didn't witness the birth (of the Legend or the babies), but firm insistance by those who did. The project gave us a ...

... old cooking pot and cooked in over coals from cow dung - the lack of any wood meant they had the improvise on many aspects. I bought a traditional hat from her whcih was hand woven and the symbol of their national flag; I tried to say thank you in Sesotho (their offical language), she laughed at my attempt, and we left. Next we headed to the slightly gimmicky, yet still equally quaint and beautiful, 'Sani Pass Pub'. Which is, interestingly, the highest ...

Doing nothing...

... We were directed to a place called Anstey Beach. It was just south of the capital and is known as being one of the best surf breaks in Africa. I can believe it... these waves were averaging about eight feet and had that Point Break curl that made Johnny Utah and a much younger and more ruggedly handsome Pat Swayze go ape **** for. For the next few days Kelly and I took a vacation from our vacation. You may not believe it.. but traveling is kind of hard work. Not ...
