Dunedin! We just loved this town! The laid back, college influenced, yet remote feel of this small southern city left a long lasting impression on all of us. We sort of randomly explored throughout the day, especially enjoying the ocean views from the city golf-course. The highlight for me was a visit to the Speights Brewery. Not only was the beer excellent, but it cast a most interesting spell on my father. You see, my dad was never much of a beer drinker at all, but for some reason he fell ...
Dunedin, New Zealand benreppWe departed Queenstown and traveled through the Kawarau Gorge on our way to Middlemarch to catch the train to Dunedin. On the train we were captivated by all the fabulous scenery in the Taiere Groge. We arrived to Dunedin in time for some dinner, but retired quickly as the jet lag was beginning to really kick in.
Dunedin, New Zealand benrepp We had originally intended to spend a day at the Hermitage on Mt Cook (also known as Aorangi and Aoraki) but the threat of heavy snow in the Alps persuaded us to spend and extra day in Dunedin.
The drive from Christchurch to Dunedin takes about 6 hours if you plan stops at most of the points of interest, for the first third of the trip you are inland from the coast although you know it isn't too far away. There are long straight stretches of roads that just beg you to break the 100kph spe...
Ben & I are finally off to Dunedin! We got a bit of a late start, leaving at around 1pm. We were up late at a BBQ hosted by some friends of Ben, Rachel & Kas. It was quite an interesting evening, with all of Ben's workmates there, and all completely ****** from hours of drinking. It was apparently an early day for them, on account of the office Christmas lunch party, including fish & chips and a whole lot of drinking. But I digress. Back to the drive down to Dunedin!! There was re...

... a lot more eerie when we left the caves and watched a DVD about glowworms who are in fact quite creepy looking insects and thinking about being shut in a cave with that many of them! After a boat ride and short drive back to the deer farm we gorged ourselves once again and rounded off the long day with pool and banoffee pie – mmmm!<br><br> Phew two and a half days down, five to go! Dunedin, South Island, New Zealand samsonite32... 140+ could be seen first as little dots in the water and then with each wave another batch would tumble ashore and waddle up the beach. John remained by the fence watching them come ashore, whilst Anne opted to crouch down on the ground near to their preferred route to their burrows. As it was by now pretty dark their features were hard to distinguish, but their lolloping gait was unmistakable as they passed inches away from us, intent on rejoining their ...
Portobello, South Island, New Zealand john2112... sea, which is literally a foot away from the edge of the tarmac. Anyway, having located wine, I went for dinner in town and by the time I got home, it was a bit cold to sit on my balcony. Tonight it was definitely too cold to sit on it (wind has been FEROCIOUS since about 3pm, it appeared out of nowhere but is not going away), but I have noted the location of the offy and still have half a bottle of white left so am hoping before I leave on Tuesday it will have ...
Dunedin, New Zealand slumberThere's an albatross colony at the end of the Otago Peninsula, but we didn't go out there, as we had no cash to get a tour guide. It's a really neat place, and we hope to go back and actually see the birds. But instead we just hung around and looked at the landscape, peered over toward Chile, and stole some sea oats.
