Dunedin

Dunedin! We just loved this town! The laid back, college influenced, yet remote feel of this small southern city left a long lasting impression on all of us. We sort of randomly explored throughout the day, especially enjoying the ocean views from the city golf-course. The highlight for me was a visit to the Speights Brewery. Not only was the beer excellent, but it cast a most interesting spell on my father. You see, my dad was never much of a beer drinker at all, but for some reason he fell ...

Train to Dunedin

We departed Queenstown and traveled through the Kawarau Gorge on our way to Middlemarch to catch the train to Dunedin. On the train we were captivated by all the fabulous scenery in the Taiere Groge. We arrived to Dunedin in time for some dinner, but retired quickly as the jet lag was beginning to really kick in.

Dunedin, all sorts of wild life.

We had originally intended to spend a day at the Hermitage on Mt Cook (also known as Aorangi and Aoraki) but the threat of heavy snow in the Alps persuaded us to spend and extra day in Dunedin.
The drive from Christchurch to Dunedin takes about 6 hours if you plan stops at most of the points of interest, for the first third of the trip you are inland from the coast although you know it isn't too far away. There are long straight stretches of roads that just beg you to break the 100kph spe...

Where are all of the penguins?

Ben & I are finally off to Dunedin! We got a bit of a late start, leaving at around 1pm. We were up late at a BBQ hosted by some friends of Ben, Rachel & Kas. It was quite an interesting evening, with all of Ben's workmates there, and all completely ****** from hours of drinking. It was apparently an early day for them, on account of the office Christmas lunch party, including fish & chips and a whole lot of drinking. But I digress. Back to the drive down to Dunedin!! There was re...

... in nature in an open space with the wind, usually with a friend). And there is also something liberating or empowering about being in control of a kite, the only attachment to you being a single string (you tie this string to the kite with a good, trustworthy knot that, if broken, will result in the loss of the kite, the ultimate failure in kite-flying practice). All of my sympathy and the innocence and beauty of flying a kite is captured quite nicely ...

9.02pm - The Lion Queen

... rather startled to discover that Otago is actually a five and a half hour journey from Christchurch, so since fresh air, loud music, shaking my head vigorously and, in a last ditch attempt, slapping myself in the face, did not sufficiently wake me up, I instead opted for a king size KitKat Chunky (my old road trip friend from Paihia) and a bag of raspberry liquorice (purchased in honour of McRobert, despite the fact that I actually prefer black liquorice if ...

A Trip Down South

... to do the next day, we went out for dinner, and stayed out till around 3! Dinner was in a sports bar on the Octagon (I suppose, the kind of Temple Bar of Dunedin) and came served on a very hot stone. The idea was better than the practicality, as it arrived and the realisation that you're paying for dinner, then having to cook it yourself kicks in. Should have listened to Elly! Anyway, we stuck around there for a few, then off to an Irish bar (called The Craic) where ...

... card games and drinks in the evening with Josh, Valarie and Sebastian. Tuesday 14th July We set off early to visit the free museum in Dunedin, which had plenty of information on the history of Otago. Including a gem of info about how to see the yellow eyed penguins (the rarest penguin in the world) for free. Luckily Sebastian had a car and kindly offered us a lift to see these penguins in Sand Fly beach. We set off for the beach mid ...

Two Days in Dunedin

... a deal with a sheep farmer to access their private beaches, so it's not a place I could have gone on my own.  We walked down to the beach and saw a couple penguins who had walked up from the beach.  They go fishing during the day and come up on the beach in the late afternoon/early evening.  We were there around 4 pm.  There were a couple of sea lions lying on the beach.  Apparently they hang out during the day, and then go fishing at night.  We walked up into the grass up ...

Spellbound in Dunedin

... animals and are out feeding during the day! We headed off anyway in exploration. First of all we came across more seals and a couple of sea lions. The seals were less that 10ft away from us and just sleeping on the beach. The sea lions were further up the beach but we weren't allowed any closer as these are the vicious ones that roar and chase after you, we admired these guys from a distance. We then continued along our ...
