... If you have time, take a few hours to visit Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei a little further onwards from Sessriem and Dune 45. Get a local guide to show you around the dunes and explain the flora and fauna of the area. (You'd be surprised how much there is!) They will also explain the traditions of the people who live(d) there and likely explain some oftheir removal from the area and why it happened. Note that only 4x4's can travel to this region past a certain point.

Namibia's Story

... variety of animals at close range. We saw all the major ones - Zebra, Giraffe, Rhino, Elephant, Lion and even a Cheetah a couple of metres away, which all caused great flurry of camera shutters. However I also learnt to appreciate the Or Oryx, Kudo, beautiful birds and the stunning design of the Springbok and their related species. The highlight was sitting around a floodlit waterhole at the edge of our camp ground - for hours we watched ...

Hauchabfontein Camping

... 8217;t heard or talked about. On this route we’ve taken we are seeing it. The people are exceptionally friendly and open, the scenery more rugged and absolutely awesome, the animals not quite so accessible or used to humans/traffic and that makes game viewing more interesting. Hiking/walking is very free and easy, few restrictions where to walk as the owners freely give you permission and information on routes you ...

Kudu steaks, Dune 45

... the top while the rest gave up pretty early on.

After Dune 45 we went to Sossusvlei which is probably the main attraction, a clay bed in the middle of the dunes that is slowly getting covered by sand and is still full off dead tree trunks. Really weird scenery. Also had a guide that gave us an idea of the animals that live in the area and what the Bushmen used to be like.
Day 172 - Namibia, Sacred Rocks - Dune 45

... people in front of you not give way but you just had to take a step back and admire the view - all was forgotten. At the top we did the usual snap happy photo session taking about a million and one shots. Bit hard not to when everywhere you look there's an amazing view. Some Asian guy dropped his water bottle and let it roll down the dune. He was very quickly abused by a German guy warning him that litter was not acceptable and he'd better go and collect it. He never did. Sarah and ...

Day 171 - Namibia, Sossusvlei - Cobra & Ostriches

... lucky Sarah and I hadn't ran any faster! It was on the road with head raised. Very cool, excellent spotting by Jay. After it slithered off into the grass we went on our way. Long drive day today. Very cold and windy as have to have the tarps up to let all the dust flow through. Spotted some hot air balloons in the distance floating above the plains and mountains which looked as if it had come straight out of a travel mag. Further into the day we ...

Rally Driving at Sossus Vlei

... events then you can picture how this stretch went. There was no slowing down, and all I could see was Bernard pointing left, then right, then left again as he indicated to Peter in which direction he should be heading. I was using my only two hands to keep myself from being ejected through the canopy roof and from being moulded to the sides of the canopy. Despite not having a 4x4 vehicle we ...

Dunes and Desert

... tired from our full day. We are driving to our next campsite at Bethanie. Our campsite is called Konkiep Lapa and it is in the Karoo desert surrounded by mountains. It is a very laid back night. We all had a few drinks and we made hamburgers for dinner. The lady who runs the place is very nice and allowed us to sleep on the floor in the bar area instead of setting up tents. Most people upgraded to rooms but a few of us set up in the bar. We are of again in the morning.

ghost towns and desert sands

The great sandy wonderland We negotiated our first border crossing at a sleepy checkpoint on the south eastern side of namibia. the border guards seemed more interested in their game of pool than any official proceedures. the pool table, a nice blue velvet, funnily did not seem out of place on the verandah of the isolated outpost. further dutious endevourers on behalf of those entrusted with namibia's security were vetoed when a lonely soldier ...

Dunes and a desert walk

We stopped by the sand dunes and did a bush walk. Our guide was so knowledgeable. I'm not going to lie. If someone had asked me to describe the desert to them, I would just say that it's a lot of sand. After this walk, I know it is so much more. We were able to see lizards, beetles and all of the other creatures that are hidden among the sand. We also were able to hike to the ...
