... for our walk through the walled village. There is a 14th century fort with make up part of the walls. Today it is used as a prison - your not supposed to take photos of it, but I snapped a couple off before I knew... luckily I was not spotted by the local polizi. The town was cute for sure but I'm not sure it deservered all the accolades given to it by other travellers we had met in Lucca. Having said that we did take more photos than usual.
Volterra, Tuscany, Italy darrenhough74... room in the afternoon and played cards on the terrace and drank the last of our beer. People were gathering under our terrace to take pictures and we had the terrace all to ourselves. This place has been so friendly and wonderful. Coletta and her sister E'letta have been such help. I think I spelled the names wrong and will check when I get home. We went back to the square to have another gigantic slice of ...

Lucca, Tuscany, Italy darrenhough74... s historical center. We began our one hour walk at the Duomo and finished at Ponte Vecchio. There were numerous sites in between providing details of Florence's political and social history. While the City itself was not as impressive as others we've visited on this trip, the sheer inspiration it provided for the rest of Europe to awaken from the Middle Ages made it well-worth a visit. Kate grabbed a delicious gelatto for the walk ...

Casale Marittimo, Tuscany, Italy therv... weather. Good thing about that is that there weren't as many people on the trails after the rain so we almost had the trail to ourselves. Of course, around 5:30pm when we were waiting for our train ride home, the sun came back out and it was beautiful outside then. Oh well, at least it wasn't a hot hike!! Loved the Cinque Terre, and wished we could have stayed a night or two there. Maybe next time!!!!
Cinque Terre, Italian Riviera, Italy kcomai... standing there and talking it over for a minute I noticed the bag had a long leather decoration attached to it and it all made sense - this was thirty five Euros! Looking inside revealed the bag was 310 Euro (about $475). We were both very relieved to figure this out so we went to look at shoes again and laugh at ourselves. Some really were small pieces of art, never meant to be worn; others were like any other pair you could get for 400 ...
Florence, Italy gojenngo... was lovely but the room was very small. The staff was great. After that it was time for a little nap. Walked again and by the end of the day had done about 6 miles. 9/4- I awoke at 5 to thunderstorms. By the time I got ready and had breakfast the skies strated to clear and it turned out to be a beautiful cool (low 70's) day. While riding on the vaporetto (water taxi) I met some people from Akron who lost their luggage when the ...
Florence, Italy cincyman... glasses and small pocket mirror left behind. I guess those are the perks of shopping for stolen goods. Or cheap quality goods. Whatever they are, they are most certainly funny. Well, the morning was at an end, and we had plans. We were heading off the the city of Cinque Terre, which I had heard many great things about, and it was necessary for us to leave soon. Off we went, like a herd of turtles, into the afternoon sun. Sighhhh
Florence, Italy dangerchristoph... and ham, and Justina ordered mozzarella, gorgonzola, onions and mushrooms. They forgot her mushrooms but she kept picking out these little green specks. She quickly became convince that those specks were anchovies, which were replaced on her pizza instead of the mushrooms. Of course, it was too funny, so I egged her on. She got to the point where she refused to eat her pizza at all. She finally called the waitress over and asked ...
