... After immigration, the train moved for a few minutes to a nearby warehouse where we waited for the train bogies (wheels) to be changed. The tracks in Europe are standard gauge (1,435mm between the inside edges of the rails), whereas Russia and Belarus use a wider 1,520mm gauge. We spent at least an hour doing nothing, whilst most of the workmen were sat around smoking. The carriages were split up and each one was lifted in 4 corners. ...

... at Trakai Castle. Trakai stands on a 2km strip of land between two lakes, making the castle position a very safe spot. Much of the castle and walls have been rebuilt in very new looking bricks, but it is a lovely spot.

Interesting nearby are the houses of the Karaites or Karaim people. Not many people of this minority ...

The sun only broke through the grey clouds twice while we were in Birkenau: Once when we turned to face the remains of an underground gas chamber, and once while our group was singing Ani Ma'Amin. ... one is In front of me with a gun pointing in my face. Looking down the barrel of a gun all I thought was, 1. I never picked that funeral song and 2. I've wasted my last day on earth eating cold pickled herring waiting for a bus I never got on. I just ignored the gun and carried on with packing my things pointing at my bus. They looked at my passport once again and said 'See you Later, Schmidt.' I could have laughed or cried or both then. In my overwhelmed state ...
