... at Trakai Castle. Trakai stands on a 2km strip of land between two lakes, making the castle position a very safe spot. Much of the castle and walls have been rebuilt in very new looking bricks, but it is a lovely spot.

Interesting nearby are the houses of the Karaites or Karaim people. Not many people of this minority ...

... dark shadow, no rustling noise. Simply branches stretching towards the sky.

The sun only broke through the grey clouds twice while we were in Birkenau: Once when we turned to face the remains of an underground gas chamber, and once while our group was singing Ani Ma'Amin. ... one is In front of me with a gun pointing in my face. Looking down the barrel of a gun all I thought was, 1. I never picked that funeral song and 2. I've wasted my last day on earth eating cold pickled herring waiting for a bus I never got on. I just ignored the gun and carried on with packing my things pointing at my bus. They looked at my passport once again and said 'See you Later, Schmidt.' I could have laughed or cried or both then. In my overwhelmed state ...

... was in Warsaw - I found my way back to the station and onto the train bound for Moscow. It is a Russian train!

My compartment friends are both Russian ladies, one of whom speaks no English at all but doesn't let that stop her, and the other who speaks good enough English to communicate. We're getting along nicely. ...

They presented us with a CD of their songs, and I gave them their choice of one of my linocut prints. I loved one of the figures created by the wood carver, and it was ours to purchase. One Jewish guest at the event showed us his collection of old and rare Jewish books. ...
