We arrived in Fairbanks yesterday afternoon. We were greeted by our Royal Caribbean Rep at the airport and were brought to the Sophie Station Hotel. The rest of the evening we were on our own to explore the city and a relaxing overnight stay. Today, our day was filled with exciting adventures, including a city tour, a Riverboat discovery Sternwheeler cruise and a visit to the El Dorado Gold Mine. We stayed a second night in Fairbanks.
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States glenroeIn Fairbanks we stayed at Sophie Station Hotel The history of Sophie Station is interesting. Construction of Sophie Station Hotel began in 1983 to house the population growth sparked by the building of the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline. However, another historic event led to its final completion: the momentous meeting in Fairbanks, Alaska of President Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II on May 2, 1984. Although neither the President nor the Pope was to stay at Sophie Station Hotel, its constructi...

... was off to Creamer's Field to see some of the cranes who had already migrated there. The crane festival will happen after we leave Fairbanks. After that I went for a private tour of the Musuem of the North with Christina. If she hadn't been with me, she would have recommended getting the audio guide. While there I got to ...

Last night we stayed at Destruction Bay, Yukon. After I posted the blog I went to the verranda and met the owner. Ended up with six of us around the table and it was a really enjoyable evening. Destruction Bay RV park is a definite stop by again. The owner and his principle ...
... it is only 15 days long and will be over in less time than I still have to wait, but I don't want to think about that. In my obsessive desire to hasten departure day I packed my bags last night. I put everything in a huge pile and then packed it. This is our first trip "one bagging" it. I'm tired of lugging along huge bags which weigh more than I do, especially on mass transportation. And, given the fact that we have a ...

My job is to take care of Gauge, our dog, make my bed, and set the table each day. I am interested in helping the Burmese people. I learned about them at our church. I hope to teach them survival skills, and how to build shelters. The Family of Ken & Allison: Allison: This ...

Fairbanks, Alaska, United States davidreichmanBlack Friday is known as the busiest shopping day of the year and for good reason--it shows a person the commercial lengths a town will come to for a "good deal." Fairbanks has grown up since the last time I was there. There is now even two Walmarts. They are the black sheep of the storefront in this still "Western Frontier," but even they were busy on this day. Shopping in negative degrees is an interesting prospect. In fact, it is one I have ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States lawstudent... suddenly...! 10:19 AM: We stopped at the Holiday station on 5th Ave because someone decided they needed a bathroom break. Someone who was not me. Back on the highway now! We cruise out of town and hit Eagle River in under 20 minutes. Carter joked that now we've seen Eagle River we can turn around and go home. I threatened him with bodily injury and on we drove... 10:50 AM ...
Fairbanks, Alaska, United States cerasij... I could get maimed in a serious accident but it was the cameras I was most worried about. So that's my grabber opening of this travelogue entry but the rest will be by in a flash. The knobs here at Kinko's charge $12.00 US per hour of internet time and it usually takes me over 2 hours to write one of my usual entries. So I'll forgo my usual witty observations and get to the action. Wednesday, July 9th - Latitude: 61 degrees North Kathleen Lake, Kluane National Park ...
