... the road. When I said “no” the very kind receptionist offered the room for 120 Euro but I declined and headed off back into the cold and onwards up this road.
I turned into the town of Seefeld and made my way along the high street. Again all the hotels were closed!! Damm, would I be sleeping in my tent tonight I wondered?? Then by luck further along the road there is a hotel with lights on and people inside. It’s a small family run hotel and as ...

... to it or not. The Munich campsite was really busy and the sites were really small – you could barely fit a trailer beside a car on a single site! We were glad that we weren’t a big vehicle and manage to find a spot without any troubles. You could still see all the dead grass from the hundreds of tents that had been set up 1 foot apart from each other; we assume these were the tour groups hitting up Oktoberfest - luckily they were all gone by the time we ...

Feeling somewhat satisfied we headed up towards Mary’s bridge which had amazing views of the castle. On our way up we heard music and as we crested the hill we were greeted with a man in traditional garb playing a really neat instrument. We stopped to listen for awhile before continuing on our way. The views from the ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Sonne Füssen
Good Value
The Room:
We got a rather large room, with all modern looking furniture. Think of Ikea but a bit of higher quality
The Service: Front desk was nice and helpful. Breakfast included and it was good.
The location:
Fussen is not too large but Sonne is right in the center of town. We had a car so we did not use the public transportation to get to the castles.
Overall Impression:
Sonne is a really good hotel that offers a great value. It is clean, friendly, in great location. What I like the most is their free internet. There is no charge for the use of internet in the room. How rare is that? Most would charge you "an arm and a leg" for internet usage. Their breakfast was also good. They have cold cuts (though I did not really eat none), cereal-lots more than the continental breakfast.
Hotel Sonne is great and so is Fussen.
One of the best hotels in which I have stayed. The decor is modern and stylish. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Location is fantastic - very central and only a 2 minute walk to the Hauptbahnhof (where the buses leave for the castles).
We had a 'Schloss' room, for which we paid an additional €10 per night but the view wasn't really worth it. The castle in question is not one of the famous 'Ludwig' castles.
Fussen is a great place to visit and we wish we could stay longer than the 2 days we had. I suspect we'll be back at some point as the whole area looks good and is only about 45 minutes by car to Zugspitze via Ehrwald in Austria (probably in the summer next time).
Breakfast is part of the tariff and it was adequate.
Overall, a very happy experience.
What a great find
We arrived in Fussen in the early evening and after trying one run down looking private hotel, we ended up at hotel Sonne. The reception was great, they had just the triple room we were looking for, 124 euros with breakfast for 3. The room was excellent and the ensuite absolutely great. We had dinner at the hotel bar/cafe and that to was excellent and well priced at 40 euros for 3 of us to eat with drinks. Breakfast the next day was great too, plenty to choose from. The hotel is quite close to the railway station but central to the town. We thoroughly enjoyed our unfortunately rather short stay in Fussen it is such a beautiful area with the lake and the castles. We would like to go back for a bit longer next time. But the hotel being so nice greatly added to our enjoyment. There is nothing better than getting to a nice hotel after a long day travelling.
A good spot for Neuschwanstein castle
Fussen is a lovely town and a great place to stay when visiting Neuschwanstein castle. Hotel is on the main road so easy to find. Despite being on the main road, the hotel was great with a lovely room: this place is not exactly as busy as London! The room did back on to the main shopping street but this was not a major problem. Staff friendly and helpful. Has underground car park as well as smaller car park out front. The whole setting is fantastic so you want to be out rather than staying in anyway...
Modern yet friendly hotel
Hotel Sonne is a modern hotel right in the center of Fussen. We stayed in one of the "Schloss" rooms, located on the 4th floor with a view of a nearby castle. There was a small balcony, comfortable beds, modern bathroom. Everything was clean. One downside was that the walls were not soundproof (but certainly not thin either). The staff was extremely friendly and all of them spoke very good English.
There are a couple food options in the neighborhood, all of them touristy (but, well, what do you expect?). The bar in the hotel had a good selection of beer, wine, and ice cream, but was a little pricey. The hotel breakfast was good and went well beyond a standard continental breakfast (they had eggs and meat).
Wonderful hotel near Neuschwanstein Castle
This is a terrific little hotel located in the heart of Fussen and near the Neuschwanstein Castle. The room (for 3 adults) was nicely appointed and clean. It overlooked the main pedestrian cafe/shopping mall in Fussen, within easy walking of lovely gardens, a castle and other sites. The restaurant was very good and, of course, you could dine outside or have a beer in comfort. I particularly liked the parking: there's a choice of a garage below ground, or for only a few euros, you could park on a grassy strip literally 20 feet from the front door, right by the outside cafe. It was comforting in a strange place to have your car nearby while sipping a beer at your hotel. This was also one of only 2 hotels on an extensive European tour that offered free internet access in the lobby. A terrific find and I wanted to stay longer than one night. Next time, I will.
Central Friendly Hotel - Fussen a MUST!!
We stayed in Fussen in the winter, and fell in love with the place! Dream-like snowy alpine scenery, not far from the famous castles (you can take a short bus ride there), and fabulous little city with lovely little cafes and restaurants.
Hotel Sonne was an excellent central place (though not hard to be central as Fussen is a small place anyway). We found the staff to be very friendly, and the rooms, while not luxurious, were bright, clean and comfortable - we had no problems, and it wasn't a bad price overall. The included breakfast was very enjoyable with a fantastic amount of variety.
We would stay at this hotel again, and definitely in Fussen!
