Permatangsiantar and Medan were both cities with really heavy traffic and I didn't hang around too long although Medan had a fantastic Central Mosque and Palace which I enjoyed visiting. ... make me sound tough.. let me tell ya.

  • I have to take malaria pills for the next month 'cause of the potential exposure.
  • There was a volcano explosion 100km away that killed 16 people the week before, so they had to hold my hand at night so I wouldn't get scared.

... before we have another mighty thunderstorm. This stops the wifi right in the middle of a hotel booking and we have no idea if it's gone through! It goes on for ages so we sit have a beer and something to eat, at about 19.00 Ian goes to ask the hotel reception if we could check out at 13.00 tomorrow instead of midday, as the tour we booked is due back at midday. They are completely unhelpful ...

... that you follow nearly to the top for about 45 minutes to a place called King Kong Hill. From there you join the tarmacked road that runs round the back of the hill and follow it to the summit for 10 minutes. The views get progressively better the higher up you get, and those from the top looking across to Mt Semuru are fabulous. ... this was supposed to be a room worth 12 (which gets you a lot in this area) but in actual fact they had tried to rip us off and give us a 5 room. I checked with the other 2 and they didn’t have a sink either. I had asked the staff if they had a better room and they told me that they were full…lied to again because we were the only guests !!
