Crossing the Border into Vietnam

... boat trip on the Mekong river, wegot taken to a fish farm and then to a Vietnamese families house. This was basically a wooden hut on wooden stilts but pretty cool none the less. On the way back our boat broke down in the middle of the river and we had to get another one to come out and get us, eventually we made it to shore and headed back to the hotel.
I had 15 mins before we had to head out for a motorbike trip upto the top of a mountain, The Vietnamese ...

... swiftly exchanged emails and arranged to meet in Phnom Phenh for a drink.

It was then time to head towards the boarder. The 3 hour boat ride was speckled with stilted bank side villages and distant flooded rice paddies. Children cheered 'hello' with intrigue and glee as we meandered down the Kong. Teenagers were at work washing and grooming huge water buffalo immersed in the water. Women in large groups washed clothing; laughing and joking. It was ...

Vietnam, North (cont..) and South

We last wrote from Hanoi - it seems like forever ago but actually is only just three weeks ago, incredible seeing as we have seen and done so much in that time.
From Hanoi we arranged a tour to Halong Bay, staying on a junk boat overnight. Luckily the rain which had flooded parts of Hanoi seemed to have dried up by the time we reached Halong bay and so we spent a lovely sunny and ridiculously hot day on the boat, visiting an amazing, enourmous cave on one of the islands, kayaking, and ...

Up the Mekong

After leaving Ho Chi Minh City we decided upon spending a couple of days meandering up the mighty Mekong before we head to Cambodia. We firstly went to the small town of My Tho (pronounced 'Mee Tow') supposedly the best place to see the Mekong, we took a tour which took us up various streams, villages and of course craft shops before we went back to town. It was a cool day. After the tour, Izzy and I left the tour group and went solo for the ...

... women making clothes. We were given some stools and we sat while they nattered away in Vietnamese. A few questions were asked in English, such as if we were married, and an observation was made on the size of our noses. Which seemed to bring around plenty of giggles. Secretly I felt as if Lan was selling me on the sly to one of the Vietnamese women, luckily that never happened.

We were given some cobs of freshly steamed corn and enjoyed a quick ...

... some of the villages along the river bank. We got to see lots of the exotic fruits growing in the wild and crossed some of the extremely rickety bridges the local use to get from one side of the river to another! That night, after sampling many of the weird and wonderful fruits on offer at the markets, Declan decided it was time to get to grips with some real local delicacy and sampled his first snake curry....

Mekong Delta

... different three day tours. Five of us ended up in a mini bus for Chau Doc but without a guide. We were supposed to be taken somewhere along the way for sightseeing but the driver chose to pick up fares along the way instead. By the time we reached Chau Doc the bus was packed, people were sitting on the floor. He dropped the contraband passengers off just before the town centre and took us to a hotel, dropped off the bags and just left. The hotel had no idea who we were and weren't ...

Reflections of Vietnam

... To list my favorite experiences in Vietnam would be impossible... I can't think of one thing that wasn't possitive, fun or enlightening. But I'll try and list some of the little things I noted about Vietnam in general that I might not have mentioned before...

> Traffic (motorbikes in particualr) and honking horns... ok, I know that I've mentioned this one before but it warrants repeating. Unless you've seen/heard it you won't believe it. In a country ...

Miles To Go Before We Can Rest

... not know where our hotel was and did not even understand what we were saying. We wrote down the name of the hotel, Asian Ruby, but that did not help. We flagged down another driver and got the same response. Bill did not know the address of our hotel, but knows it is in District 1, so he pulled out a guide book and pointed to a an intersection that should get us close. Please note: the metered taxi was mode of transportation #8 and I did not include the ...
