... pattern. More of those magnificent carved wooden doors built for giants and a statue of Dante on one side. Crossed the River Arno and followed the signs to Plazzale Michelangelo up the steps at the top of the hill. A great view out over Florence in all directions and a bronze copy of Michelangelo's David to look at. Back down the hill to a pizzeria for lunch, then followed the line of old town walls up another hill to the fort of Giorgio. Took a wrong turn here ...

The shop keepers are not nearly as aggressive as the ones in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, but can still be entertaining in trying to gain the attention of passerbys. ... traditional fishing village style surrounds, a cute Italian man mending his boat :), the old townsmen all gathered together on a seat at the top of some stairs having what looked like their daily get together, little steps carved into the side of the cliffs everywhere going up and down into little areas where enterprising Italians had set up cafes and charged double prices on everything for the opportunity to have lunch with a pretty amazing view. ... with Florence’s colour coordination. The whole city is a lovely terracotta colour with iconic green trees lining the edges. On the way down I heard an American lady *****ing about how unsafe and inconvenient the stairs were. Well, you shouldn’t have worn high heels today honey!

We also visited the main cathedral and the crypt, where you can see mosaics and Roman ruins. The decoration in the Baptistery was so shiny and splendid.

... get in for tea at 7 pm. It's now 6:30 pm. Quiet night planned for tonight - our bags are already in our rooms and we have been given our room key. Thursday morning Just a note about our rooms. In Italy we have been introduced to bidets - interesting concept! Also the alarm cord in the showers.
