After staying overnight at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge , we went back into the Lost Citadel for another look on our own. We wanted to stay at the Sanctuary Lodge so we would have ready access to the park all day. We were able to come and go on our tickets as we liked. We climbed up to the top to the Gate of the Sun so we could see the classic postcard view of Machu Picchu. We spent another several hours in the park on this second day here just to be sure we could soak up as much of it as...
Sacred Valley, Peru alreadypackedOur airport man picked us up this morning, took us to the airport, and walked us through check in. Our plane was delayed for almost an hour in Lima due to bad weather at Cuzco. I was wondering what that was going to mean for our visit there since this is the rainy season in the highlands. However, it was okay by the time we arrived and after watching the approach I am glad we delayed. We flew along a ridge line on downwind and looked like we were not far from dragging a wing tip or sucking fo...
Yucay, Cusco, Peru sjl901I get everything out the door on time and head down for breakfast. There's not too many folks at this hour after the mobs other mornings. It's been hard to find a chair. I end up checking the big bag plus the large back pack. It's really tough to be cut back on clothes when this is supposedly when we will want the most layers. The sun is very bright as usual but the air is very cool. I'm bundled up to start the day. We drive along- past villages all in chocolate adobe with their little icon g...

... our place on the Incan Road trek. Places are limited to only 400 people a day on the four day hike along the old Incan trail, so places fill up 4-5 months in advance and we were determined not to miss doing it while in South America!
Renee and I have had our fair share of adventure and fun on the trip so far, but expectations and excitement was overflowing in both of us the night before we were to be picked up. We`d packed light, but hired a "chaskie" (Quechuan for ...
... see. From up there, you can get a perspective on the entire ruins that is quite special. The ruins actually have no name themselves, noone knows their name. Machu Picchu, the name comes from the other mountain that is the backdrop to the ruins seen from the climb up Way na Picchu. The The word ¨ruins¨ is inaccurate, because standing there overlooking everything, it´s as if the Incas just left yesterday.

Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, Peru edgar_betania... which was pretty scary as it was really steep in places and the track was so narrow with a sheer drop to the side of us (we discovered that Lee hasn’t conquered his fear of heights after all!) We then ascended for 800 meters which felt like it took forever. By the time we finally reached our lunch stop Celia was almost ready to give up and collapsed into a hammock ...
