Dry Tortugas National Park and Key West

A travel blog entry by dsandow

... Otter amphib for the departure off the runway to fly at about 500 feet out to Fort Jefferson on Garden Key in Dry Tortugas National Park. And what an awesome flight it was. We spotted shipwrecks, turtles, sharks, and porpoises from the air.

Because of the early flight, we literally had this historic fort to ourselves. We wandered through the halls where Dr. Samuel Mudd was held prisoner (he was alleged to be ...

Making Tracks

... Indian Key Pass near Everglades City was our destination Wednesday night. We were blown away by all the dolphins playing with their babies and chasing fish. Thursday came bright and early, oops, not so bright as we got up before dawn to get a jump on the long day ahead. Dodged lots and lots of crab pots--so difficult to see in the bright sunlight. ...

I woke up late with Mom and Dad. "Chef" Michaels in my bowl again. D... Vet.
Mom made breakfast then decided to take me for a walk in the neighborhood. Still too windy to boat.
See pictures of my lovely neighborhood. Mom got a little carried away taking pictures of everything. All very nice except for those stupid signs which I cannot READ. Got really thirsty on my walk. Puddles of water everywhere but mom wouldn't let me ...

Sunrise, snorkelling and strippers

... who told us the weather forecast was "just perfect" today. Caveat emptor etc etc.

Wet suit, flippers, mask and snorkels duly donned and in we go. Last time we tried this in Australia, it was a fantastic experience; crystal clear waters, multi-coloured coral and the gentle tranquility of swimming in nature's most beautiful aquarium. Today, it's brown and rough with the occasional darting flash of yellow or blue catching our eye but for the most part we can't help feeling, we ...

    Very Run Down...didn't even stay!

We had reserved 1 week there. My husband I arrived before the in-laws (luckily). We went to our room and absolutely could not believe it. It was like 2 hotel rooms joined by a so called kitchen. Very dirty. Fortunately I had brought the picture shown on the internet (very deceiving). I showed it to the lady in the front office and told her I thought that was false advertising and they found us another resort to stay at.

    Will Not Go Back!

Before we arrived at the hotel in March 2004, we had some concerns after reading some reviews. Unfortunately, it was one of the few places we could get on short notice (for reasonable money). The room was so bland of any color. The walls were grey and the furniture and floors were old and dirty. The king size bed was like sleeping on a rock! The table chairs were those white plastic patio chairs that you get for eight bucks! The best part of the room was the bathroom. Overall, the building was very run down. It seemed to be quite the place for boaters though, but then again they could always stay on their boat. It is too bad, because everything outside of the room was fine. They have a nice pool, tennis courts, and pizza restaurant on the premises. The harbor area is also very nice. If they would only add some color to their rooms, and upgrade the furniture it could be so much better. It was very uncomfortable! We would definitely not stay there again!

    Enjoyed our stay.

Sombrero Resort is very clean. If tile floors could be added to the 1 bedroom units that would make such a difference. Marathon is for fishing, boating, swimming, lobstering so it is natural for people to come in wet to shower, thus making stained rugs. Most people are out in their boats all day or beach or swimming pool and come home in evening to shower, eat and sleep, enjoy the air conditioning and get up the next day to start all over agan. Enjoyed our stay and would go back!!!!

    I'll be back

Close to everything...beaches, boating, snorkeling, shopping, restaurants, golf...the pool area is lovely with wonderful Tiki bar, and friendly staff. The rooms are spacious, have decks, plus they are waterfront. If you have a boat you can dock there too. There's also a restaurant on site. Plus there's a bike path down to Sombrero beach, which is beautiful. Had a great time, and "I'll be back"!!!

Sleeping in the car would be better

Stay anywhere but here. Threadbare carpet, window a/c units that made more noise than a jet engine. Really--a $25 room for $120 a night.

We had booked 5 nights and stayed one. The first room they gave us was so run down and dirty feeling, we asked to change. The second room was smaller (the first was a nice size) and a bit newer feeling. The toilet was leaking and the floor/carpet seemed very dirty. I hated putting my daughter on the pull out couch. The pool area and bar were nice, but not good enough to make up for the room. We moved out after one night and went to the Reef.

If they just spend some money to update and really clean up, this could be nice. The location is good and the set up of the 1 bedroom mini suites is nice. Too bad they have let it get this run down.

    Terrific Vacation

My husband and I had such a terrific time at Sombrero. We rented Kayaks on property and paddled thru Boot Key Harbor and out to the beach! In the evening, there was a party at the Tiki Bar - which was loads of fun. Location is terrific - close to fishing boats, diving, grocery stores, liquor store, etc. Nice relaxing vacation. We will definately go back and next time bring bicycles with us. Can't wait.

    Its ok

Definitely 2 star. very plain jane. I don't consider the beach to be close even though its less than a mile its not much less. If I come back to the Keys its going to be in better style. Nothing really wrong with the hotel.... just not memorable.

    Zero stars

This place was described to me as 2 star, but it is not even 1 star. I have never stayed in a more run-down dirty place. There were even ants in the kitchen & the door hinges squeaked when you opened the door just like a haunted house. The bed had an ancient broken down mattress that gave me back pains. To top it all off, they turned the water off on me with no warning while I was in the middle of a shower with soap & shaving cream on me. It was very expensive to stay in such a seedy place.

    One Night Only

The first sign of a dissappointment to come was that the Sombrero was not easy to find, especially after dark. Another sign was that the Sombrero is a time-share. While normally this would not seem to be a problem it seems to be a time shared oriented to those planning on mostly fishing during their stay. Access to the second level (really the third level counting the private parking areas under the units) was tedious as you had to shlepp your luggage from the back parking lot to the 1st level (actually 2nd) elevator. The rooms face the harbor canal on open balconies. This was the next dissappointment as we do not like rooms that are accessible from common balconies. The rooms, while comfortable, were a little worn and tired as was the master bed. The folding sleeper mattress and springs was very uncomfortable. The wall unit A/C in the MB did not blow cool air. While management was magnanimous in offering a new room my wife and son were ready for the newly opened (and more expensive) Best Western down the street. Also - no beach, no access to the beach except by car or a long walk.
