SIEM REAP

Our full story is at http://isis-journey.blogspot.com/2008/0 1/cambodia-5th-9th-december-2007.html (This entry continues from the Phnom Penh trip) 7th DEC 2007~ Early in the morning, we headed for Siem Reap by bus. A 6-hour journey from Phnom Penh. The country side was very dusty and the road was very narrow. We crossed a lot of pond and wood houses. We stopped nearby some streets for a rest and toilets. I saw people selling fried insects nearby the market. ... One of the most weird looking f...

After seeing the last of the in-country team from The Cambodia Project leave Phnom Penh on Thursday I found it time to head out myself. The team had wrapped up its work after more than two months in Cambodia and I was in touch with Jean-Michel up to the end finishing last minute details on Thursday afternoon. Friday morning, I packed up my backpack, leaving my suitcase at my Phnom Penh hotel, and walked over to my friend Benny's place. Then we headed over to catch our bus to Siem Reap. Six ho...

Siem Reap

We arrived in Siem Reap airport early at 7:05am. Getting through customs and immigration here was quite a chore involving filling out many, many forms. A declaration form, an arrival form, a departure form, 2 separate visa application, documentation of flight from Singapore and providing a passport photo. While the customs officer was processing and stamping our visa and passport, I counted at least 6 different types of stamps and each were used several times per passport. And oh yeah, Felici...

Quad Adventure meets Tomb Raider

We started the day at 6 in the morning. A tuk-tuk (The Cambodian version) came to pick us up from our hotel to take us to our quad atv adventure. We met Sobey, our guide for the day. We also met Sean and Jen, another couple who from Toronto who was going on the ATV tour as well. We got a quick introduction on how to operate the ATV and then we were off. These Polaris TrailBlazers were automatic transmissions, so learning to drive one was fairly intuitive. Once on the trail, it quickly became ...

Angkor at Sunrise and The Floating Villages

The day started early at 3:45am... its pretty hard to wake up at that time, but somehow we managed to pull ourselves out of bed and got dressed to go to Angkor Wat. We met Kim-san in the hotel lobby, and drove out to Angkor Wat in the dark. We got there around 4:50am and the first rays from the sun had just started to break the horizon lighting a tiny glow over the Angkor Towers. There were already a few tourists there lined up by the pool near the temple setting up their tripods for the perf...

Angkor Wat-Day 3

... br>
It really would be silly for me to even say much more than I already have about the temple itself and the wonders contained within. It is a masterpiece of creation and there's not much that can really compare with it on the same scale. Yes, there's Machu Picchu (sic?) and St. Peter's but these all stand in their own categories also. They're all one of a kind and, having seen them all, it would be like comparing apples and oranges ...

Sam's story (finally! )

... want to come back in 2 years time to see how they are going on.

Each child at the orphanage has a book with their picture on the front and any volunteers can write a comment in there and put a picture, so I have bought these 3 their books and I have got pictures printed off to go in.

i am having an amazing time and wish I could stay here for longer but I do want to get back and see my family and friends.

Angkor Day 3; a race for sunrise and the wild east

... The early morning sunlight was starting to pierce the foliage of the trees. Dappled rays of light and the mist from the wet dew as it evaporated was surreal. Almost eerie! The central open-roofed building was the highlight. Pillars were decorated with dancing apsaras, the detail was impressive. Navigating around the complex was great fun, but you definitely need to watch your step as narrow doorways and large spider webs almost give it that maze feeling.

The founder Aki Ra is a very interesting guy (we got to briefly meet him aswell, which was great) he has gone from laying mines for different army factions during is early years to single handidly de-arming over 50000 mines as he tries to ensure the safety of the cambodian people. He however is no longer allowed to personally use the ...

Turning 30 amongst the temples

... clock is refusing to acknowledge Cambodian time and is sending me to bed straight after tea and waking me up around 5am. No partying for this self-confessed nana. We had booked a tuk-tuk driver for the day to get us from temple to temple and as we drove around the misty moat to the entry to Angkor Wat, I was filled with a sense of excitement and accomplishment. I was about to tick a box and schnap the photo to prove it. Angkor Wat, you're going down on my list ...
