Tavira is quite close to the mountains. We've been in the foothills a bit as you might know if you've been following our blogs. However, a serious mountain range (size of mountains feels like parts of West Virginia) follows a good part of the Algarve, a region that until yesterday, we had not explored.

One can clearly see the labyrinth of walls, doors and rooms where, it is said, once lived seafarers, princes, and before them, the Moors, who ruled this land for hundreds of years before it was claimed by its indigenous Portuguese people.

The day was capped by a stop at Veneza, our favorite coffee shop on the Tavira central square, the Praca de Republica.

... and Marcela reported a wondrous solstice experience next to the surf, under the stars and moon - reflected in the ocean, and far away (across the river and the Ria Formosa) from evidence of civilization, the beautiful lights of Tavira. The next day, we flamed up our own “campfire” on the front sidewalk of the cabin in a charcoal grill. It was warm and great! And totally legal!
