We left the ship this morning again in the company of Hugo and Pedro. Today's excursion offered by the ship included a visit to a well-known local quinta (winery) where the famous Portuguese Port wine is produced. The plan for walkers, however, was to join Hugo, Pedro, Ruth, and me on a walk through the vineyards where the grapes are produced.

Our bus wound out of the tiny, riverside village of Pinhão up a series of ...

A wee bit of sunshine this morning but still quite cloudy. The weather the past few days has been cooler and wetter than normal. Back to our little village for a coffee and one of our favourite desserts- a Portuguese custard ...

The bus trip up the hill today took us to the town of Vila Real, site of the extraordinary Mateus Palace - the building depicted on the Mateus wine labels. Remember when we thought we were so sophisticated, drinking this pink bubbly stuff?

I was here on my first trip to Portugal many years ago. (So you won't be surprised to hear that it only looked vaguely familiar.) I don't think the baroque-style country home built ...

We cruised this beautifully sunny morning to the town of Pinhao, enjoying the quiet of this narrow part of the river with little more than vineyards to offer. Of course, we did go through a lock, which still brings the passengers out on the deck to see the process one more time.

As soon as we arrived, we climbed on our buses and went up, up and ...
