... for an overnight stay in the Douro River valley. Thank goodness we had air conditioning since for part of the trip the outside temperature reached 35 C (95 F). Along the way, we stopped in the little town of Amarante to visit the Sao Goncalo Monastery. The monastery stands near the river and bridge in a pleasant square surrounded by white granite houses. ... visited the Sandeman winery, one of the premier port manufacturers where we had a tour of the facility, learned the process of making port, and tasted several of their wines.

Entertainment on the boat tonight was a local group of musicians and singers who played typical Portuguese folk music and even a bit of fado. We sat too close to the front and I ended up as part of a Portuguese folk dance where I can proudly say I held my own!

... of course) before heading into Pinhau fully. Next stop was Sandeman's Quinta were we arrived at 12.55 to be told they shut between 1-2pm! They sold us a tasting of their chocolate lovers ports and their 100yrs of tawny port. We are asked to sit out side and enjoy them while they were at lunch! We did sit outside luckily in a sheltered spot at the heavens opened again. The chocolate lovers port consisted of a vao vintage and a ruby port. ...

... books in the winter lounge over looking the vineyards. At 4pm we went for the wine tour and at 6pm the sun finally came back out! I wondered outside for a while but the seats we all wet!
