Las Canas Fray Bentos, Uruguay, 2 7433
... way to the Museum of the Industrial Revolution. This came about as a result of a German scientist, Justus von Liebig, discovering how to make meat extract. In conjunction with another German they started the Liebig Meat Extract Company in 1865. Today we would recognise the products as being “Bovril” or Marmite”, although those are different brands. The factory, recognized as the start of the Industrial Revolution in South America, became a major success ...
Fray Bentos, Uruguay mikeandmary... model ships and quite a few bits off the Belgrano which I hadn´t realised the Brits torpedoed in an agreed safe zone during the Falklands War. No wonder they are ****** at us, we didn´t even fight fair. <br>The catamaran over to Carmelo in Uruguay went through the islands of the delta of the Rio Parana and then across the Rio de la Plata formed by various large rivers. We arrived after dark and stayed at the first hotel we found. Next morning we went for a walk and ...
Fray Bentos, Uruguay warty007... street in the world. We went to Buenos Aires on a school field trip, but only to visit a synagogue, mosque, and Russian Orthodox church. The synagogue was very interesting, as was the mosque, but in the Roman Orthodox church I couldn´t understand the priest´s lecture. Apparently, in the Jewish texts, each word has a sound, so the texts can be sung. The guide sung a few words for us and it was really cool. Other than this, there ...
Gualeguaychu, Argentina satellite93... they have many tourists and probably none at this time of year, we got a room in quite a nice hotel for not much money. The meat factory looked closed but some woman took us in and checked if we could visit, and we were greeted by the site director, who took us in, and was very pleased to be able to have a conversation with us in English. The old office is left pretty much as it was, with english typewriters and books all over the place ...
Fray Bentos, Uruguay guyandcalum... now worshiped like a saint. We had seen the fair being set up on our way through on the bus next to his shrine and it looked to be shaping up to be a huge event. The cowboys we did see hanging around looked the real deal with wide belts with fancy leather-work and silver-work and large hats, the string under the chin adjusted with, again, beautifully worked silver ornaments . It was far cry from kiwi farmers in their gumboots, shorts, singlets and checkered, woolen ...
Carlos Pelligrini, Argentina nancydeb... Don´t speak a lick of the local langauge (although thats never stoped me before) not to sure of where i am going to meet them or how to contact them heard brazil is a lil dangerious, although this has never stoped me before and i´ve always found it mostly to be media hype and never as bad as people say, Regardless having grown up in a propaganda world the unkown still is a lil worrisome to me, especially since i´d be going up on my own ...
Paysandu, Uruguay senorbrian... of food factories given my ex-career, but there wasn´t much else to do - in fact, that is generous - there wasn´t ANYTHING else to do! The museum is the actual old factory, and the area that it is in was specifically built for the people that worked there - all the houses / schools / parks etc. Apart from that...not much else to say except that Argentina was so close I could have swam it, but instead I had to wait to do the crossing properly, grrrr!
Fray Bentos, Uruguay kathryn77... that it barely feels like a capital city. Then again, it is a capital of a country where the entire population only just climbs above 3.5 million people. Drivers aside, Montevideo feels so similar to Argentina that it is sometimes hard to believe we've actually changed countries. It has the same majority Spanish/Italian ethnic mix, people still speak with the vos form of Spanish, people are still obsessed with Mate (local tea drink), they also claim ...
Montevideo, Colonia and Fray Bentos, Uruguay marc-patty... match as it was a little slow however being amongst the atmosphere and with the views was great. http://images.travelpod.com/users/fiona cannon/take_off.11651 84220.imagen_021.jpg http://images.travelpod.com/users/fiona cannon/take_off.11651 84220.imagen_002.jpg By the end of the evening we were ordering Champagne and my feet were finding the non existent music as usual.
Buenos Aires, Argentina fionacannonDay 226 Monday 13/06/05 Colonia - Fray Bentos We wandered through Colonia in the morning and sadly it has turned cold and dull. It´s not as nice to wander through in this weather :( We had a Mexican lunch (told you there were some interesting restaurants) before catching an afternoon bus to Fray Bentos. We arrived about 8.30 and walked into the centre of town to our Hotel. We found a lovely pizza restaurant with a wood fire and a wood oven - which warmed us up nicely. (oh ...
