Touring Helsinki

... to Turku to catch a boat to Stockholm for a night before heading back to Munich. So with that I say good bye Finland. I only saw Helsinki but it is the Jewel of the Baltic and I will be back to visit and visit more of Finland. I still must make it up to the north to visit where my grandfather was from but I know can safely say I have been to my mother land countries, Germany and Finland. It does feel awesome to say that!

The best word to describe the match? Terrifying!

... if I knew anything about Sibelius apart from him writing music!). Then it was on to the match.
What a dull match it was. It probably didn't help that we were both still exhausted from the night before, but it certainly wasn't anywhere near as exciting as our game! The Ukraines won 1-0. They celebrated well for a team who had just crashed out of the Euros! Dinner was at Chico's (where we met up with half the gang the night before). Massive burgers and chips were ...

Last days in Finland....sigh....

... I say that the airport in Finland sucks. No really. First of all, I've been fortunate enough to only lose my luggage two times in my life....those two times: arriving in Helsinki. It's not a big airport....and I'm pretty sure my luggage was there, they just couldn't find it. Either way it works out though, cause the delivery guy had to carry them up the three flights of stairs to Paullina's apartment--not I. :)

ALSO, when leaving ...

... about finding somewhere to grab dinner before we got the bus back to our camp site. Seo and I found a place called Carrols, which is similar to McDonalds, and grabbed some food there before having to run back through the pouring raing to the bus in the square where it left us. We were absolutely drenched (the raincoat I was wearing didn't put up much of a fight) and it felt really good to put on some warm, dry clothes when we ...

... wet and in the clothes I sleep in (I'd had a shower and basically thrown everything I own into the washing machine), and some people start asking me in French how to operate the machines. Why they thought I spoke French, I have no idea. Maybe that's all THEY spoke. In any case, I helped them, retrieved my own laundry and sallied forth into the wonderful world of Helsinki to grab a glass of wine at a sidewalk cafe. While ...

Fun in Finland

... caught a island canal cruise for 19E. Well worth every cent to get a good feel for how the Helsinkii's maintain their nautical culture. Stunning islands with various houses and saunas on the waterfronts. Wandered through some more cathedrals and old buildings to an early retirement to the room.

... fish food. As we left the market we were but a few blocks from our ship. We saw Helsinki during a rain. It was not the best way to visit the city but we were still impressed with the city and its people. Helsinki does not have the high prices that we experienced in Copenhagen. It is a city that we may like to revisit on a bright summer day. Hunt for Harriet Results. This hunt proved to be difficult in that Harriet was wearing black as was many of the other people in ...

Vihdoinkin ollaan paasty matkaan. Lahettiin just hesasta Tolstoilla puksuttamaan. Koko paiva ollu hillitonta juoksemista paikasta toiseen. Nyt paas vahasen rauhottumaan. Upward mobility

Hyvää päivää everyone. This has been a momentous week for me, and I haven't even started Finnish classes yet. Read on for more... I bought a bicycle! This was suggested to me first by the many bike lanes weaving through Helsinki's center, and secondly by Ian, the owner of an English-language bookstore I've visited a few times. (Arkadia Oy, it's a great place.) I went looking for one and didn't have any luck until a mechanic in a shop sold me ...

... I'm up against here. It's fascinating. Finnish people are on the whole very legalistic. They will not jaywalk under almost any circumstances (unless drunk). Even if there's no traffic, they won't go until the green light. The system for buying tickets on a train is mosty voluntary, and people do it. They're also quite punctual, especially in relation to the public transport. You can set your watch by ...
