And that's when it hit us. The girls had got through to the quarter finals and we were going home. We weren't going to see it, except on the tv. Gutted.

We all went back to the players' hotel after the game. We were all allowed to eat (which was good because I was starving! We still had a roll each on the coach, but that's not always what you need after a game) so we had some herring, veg, mixed seafood and noodles, and mash ...

Caught the train from Helsinki to Turku which only took about two hours. They have very nice trains. Easy city to navigate. I'm going to check out the harbour and book a spot on one of the ferries heading for ALands. Unfortunately I can't go today because the ferries only depart at 0815 and 2015. So I'm staying in Turku today which is fine because I forgot that I wanted to see the castle. Now I'm just waiting for the hostel to open so I can drop my bag off. It's getting lighter every day.

The room is up by 8:30. Early for backpackers. I have coffee (instant – far from ideal), strawberries and bread/cheese that I had brought from Helsinki. OK for breakfast. For the morning, I hang around with a guy from South Korea who speaks limited English. It is his first trip internationally. I give him advice. I later take off for Naantali, a laid-back beach resort about 20 minutes away. Most people who go there are going to a mini-Disney theme ...

... so tucked into our raspberries, apples and water bottles, while sitting in a garden outside the castle. We decided to have a quick look at the nearby maritime museum. We sought advice on which bit to do if we were only doing a bit. (Entry to this museum was also included in our Turku card.) This was probably an excellent museum, about Finland's maritime history. We read with interest the charts with English translations at the entrance to each of the rooms, but only ...

... Next stop was Naantali. Our guide book described it as a pretty little port town, crowded with tourists in summer, and in winter looking like a movie set after all the actors had gone home. It was an extremely pretty old town, and not much was open. We walked up to the lovely church that was originally a 15th century convent. The church wasn't open for us to go in, but it was beautiful in itself, and stood high enough for good views over the harbour. There ...

I found Travel Pod after my trip to Northern Europe, but I thought I would just write here so that people know they can ask me if they have any questions about Finland. I studied in Turku Finland for a semester at Abo Akademi University. I lived 4km from the school and town, and the public transportation is what I used, it was not bad at all. Lastly and a big highlight of the day, we went to Helsinki Stadion, we went into the Olympic Museum, saw the famous Lasse Viren video and we also went up the Helsinki Olympic Tower - Great and awesome views, especially of the city and the buldings. It was a tad bit windy and chilly. While were up on the observation deck, we talked with a lady and her son, they were very nice ...
