Dalat Disappoints

Dalat had all the makings for a worthy side trip--hilly landscape, cooler temperatures (we're moving back into the high 30's C as we slink our way south), evergreened forests, waterfalls, lakes, gardens, strawberry jam, local wine (Vang Dalat), inexpensive golf, an artists enclave, a Sofitel Hotel (see Derek and Michelle Day blog for more on Sofitel), romance and charm (Dalat is reputed to be Vietnam's number one honeymoon destination and known throughout the country as "Le Petit Paris"). So ...

Vers Da Lat

Hitting the highlands near Dalat

After a week on the beach at Mui Ne (no we didn't go to the sand dunes, the waterfall or try kite surfing - we are just lazy gits), we took a bus to Dalat, which is in the Central Highlands. We arrived in the early afternoon of Monday, after an 8 and a half hour journey, and checked into our cheapest (and dirtiest) accommodation yet at US$10. Dalat was a bit of a disappointment at first. Apparently it used to be known as Le Petit Paris, so I was expecting it to be very French. It wasn't reall...

Dalat

DALAT Julie and I have spent a day and a half in this hill station in the south of Vietnam, after arriving yesterday on the bus from Nha Trang (5 hours journey). Dalat's climate and atmosphere is much different to the rest of Vietnam. As it is in the hills, it is warm rather than hot in the day and cool at night. One needs a sweater later in the evening. As a result, the town has more of a feel of an alpine town, although one cannot mistake it being than anywhere else other than Vietnam becau...

Delightful Dalat

... room. The wine is in a cute clay pot, all you need to do is stick the straws in the top and drink away. Once we got back we had a look in the pot it was full of corn or rice, slightly confused we cautiously took a small sip to find out it is some sort of rice wine. Not pleased with the taste we gave it to the hotel owners to enjoy, and bought a bottle of wine from th corner shop.

Today we were planning on visiting the local villages. As we left it started to spit, carrying ...

The poor pigs were being drip fed 70%vol. rice goo. A nicely sobering thought though was that they would be oblivious when heading to market.

Our day finished with a brief visit to a flower farm and an exhilarating ride back to town in the pouring rain.

It was also hilarious to watch Rose get fished out of the water each time (like many Vietnamese, she can't swim) because the current would sweep her far to the left and the shore was to the right.

After the water slide we found the (I have to interrupt this blog to mention that the 8 year old Vietnamese girl next to me at the Internet cafe is smoking a CIGARETTE) most formidable of all abseiling challenges - a massive waterfall.
