Dalat Disappoints

Dalat had all the makings for a worthy side trip--hilly landscape, cooler temperatures (we're moving back into the high 30's C as we slink our way south), evergreened forests, waterfalls, lakes, gardens, strawberry jam, local wine (Vang Dalat), inexpensive golf, an artists enclave, a Sofitel Hotel (see Derek and Michelle Day blog for more on Sofitel), romance and charm (Dalat is reputed to be Vietnam's number one honeymoon destination and known throughout the country as "Le Petit Paris"). So ...

Vers Da Lat

Hitting the highlands near Dalat

After a week on the beach at Mui Ne (no we didn't go to the sand dunes, the waterfall or try kite surfing - we are just lazy gits), we took a bus to Dalat, which is in the Central Highlands. We arrived in the early afternoon of Monday, after an 8 and a half hour journey, and checked into our cheapest (and dirtiest) accommodation yet at US$10. Dalat was a bit of a disappointment at first. Apparently it used to be known as Le Petit Paris, so I was expecting it to be very French. It wasn't reall...

Dalat

DALAT Julie and I have spent a day and a half in this hill station in the south of Vietnam, after arriving yesterday on the bus from Nha Trang (5 hours journey). Dalat's climate and atmosphere is much different to the rest of Vietnam. As it is in the hills, it is warm rather than hot in the day and cool at night. One needs a sweater later in the evening. As a result, the town has more of a feel of an alpine town, although one cannot mistake it being than anywhere else other than Vietnam becau...

Dalat has extremely nice weather and good fertile soil and that is why there are so many fruits, flowers and veggies planted here. Agriculture is their number 1 industry, tourism comes far behind.

Today the sun has come out and it's the perfect day (especially when it's 0 C in Montreal, sorry to hear that, friends and families!). Although it's about 20-22C, the locals are wearing sweaters and jackets, and some even have wool hats and mits on ...

Back onto 4 wheels.

... and New Zealand where cultural genocide took place trying to "whiten' the natives or herd them into reserves where the 'savages' could be controlled. The scenery for the second day was amazing. Big mountains, sweeping valleys and lovely wee communities all along. We went to a house to see rice paper being made by a family. Again nothing went to waste and in this place the pigs lived in one of the rooms!! You should get some downstairs Pauline to mask the smell of ...

... Church and past the large lake scattered with "romantic" rented swan boats, as seen on every lake in the middle of a tourist district. I had read in my book that Da Lat is a common place for the Vietnamese to spend a honeymoon.

At this point our spirits were fairly high. Although we'd gone the wrong way twice, we were enjoying Da Lat. We decided we were hungry and also wanted to try to book either a trek or a canyoning trip for the next day so we tried to make our ...

Hang Nga Crazy House- The
closest thing I can compare to the Crazy house is the Winchester
Mystery House back in CA. The owner is still in the process of building
more rooms and completing her grand designs and happened to be giving
orders to someone while we were there.

Each room is very
creative and different from the next. There are a lot of staircases all
over the place and many of them lead to a wall ...

Destination: Dalat

... They're aren't any other airplanes in sight - just us. The captain leisurely parks the plane steps from the entrance. I step out and I'm momentarily taken over by the fresh air and cool breeze across my face. I close my eyes, and stop in my tracks. Oh my gosh! I had forgotten what clean air smelled like! And the breeze, the cool air! I feel like I'm home!!! What a welcome relief from the heat and humidity in ...

First week in Vietnam - Saigon to Dalat

... m taking the bus instead t'row morning, but definitely up for more motorbike adventures in 'nam!

Loving Vietnam so far, looking forward to spending a few days lying on the beach in Nha Trang and partying.... fingers crossed for sun... my Thai tan is fading fast!
It's been a great week, nice mix of city and mountain town - few beers, nothing too heavy after all the Thai partying... and great to bump into some familiar faces that I've met along the way as well as Ali!
