Flic en Flac - Paradise Lost?

Ce matin, je pense en francais pour le premier fois depuis peut-etre dix ans! (This morning, I thought in French for the first time in maybe 10 years!) Between Madagascar and Mauritius, so far, I've been doing a great job of not speaking any English. It has made some conversations interesting, if not difficult or amusing for other people, but the language has begun to come back to me a bit. I'd like to relearn French as well as pick up a few other languages before my time is done. Oh, and by ...

Relaxation

... were paying for this service (We paid $57 US for two nights, so don’t think it was expensive). After our fairytale awakening, we met up with some friends and hung out at the beach. We kicked off the day with some Mimosas and then began to wander around. Our house was actually very close to the spot we were at, so we brought them over and showed them around. They couldn’t believe how nice it was. They told us ...

Ile Aux Cerfs

... so we sped straight across to the island. We had a quick wander around and settled on the sheltered side of the island and set up shop for lunch. After lunch we were back on the boat for the trip to the waterfall and back before more time on the island. On the way back from the waterfall the heavens opened which wouldn't have been that much of a problem but we were going very fast in a ...

Anna's not here!

Today started again with a trip to hospital, this time it was Dr Bholah's endoscopy clinic. Endoscopy is very different out here, its a conveyor belt, im not sure the camera is sterlised properly each time and they dont use any sedation just hold them down and go. Luckily Dr Bholah speaks very good english and is very much like an english doctor in the way he does things which is a breath of fresh air. He is ...

Leg Time......

... this was common in Mauritius. So all it would take is a little more education and closer management but they dont do it! After a hectic morning we headed back home, grabbed a bit to eat for lunch and headed to Perybere beach for some serious sun lounging. The weather was as good as ever now the anti-cyclone had passed so i stayed on the beach all afternoon - dont worry mum i reapplied the suntan lotion every 30 mins ;-). Then ...

MAURITIUS and Driving With Miss Marjorie

... choose which one...." "OK, OK." You must go now. Have a nice day...and drive carefully," he says. His compatriot brings three lanes of traffic on the motorway to a screeching halt, to let us back in. They can't get rid of us quickly enough, it seems. But, Dang! No free room. Thus we were forced to find the lovely Sun Villa in Flic en Flac, where we stayed for the next several nights. When one door closes, another opens.

Last day in Mauritius

Today was my last full day on Mauritius. Most of the morning was spent with a visit and counseling. I did some more office work and festival planning, and then had dinner with the Marvin and Gloria Curry, an American couple on an extended stay in Mauritius for a business project. Among other things we talked about the education and the challenges of international travel, of which they too have done quite a bit ...

Mauritius, a week ago

... I had written down the name of the place that we were going so I got out my piece of paper and paid a guy a dollar to show us to the correct bus. He didn't speak any English as far as I could tell, but he seemed to know exactly where we were headed. We checked with the bus driver before we left to make sure we were on the right bus, just to make sure this guy wasn't throwing us for a loop. The bus was packed-at least three people per seat and people standing in the aisle ...

Dodo Island

... our waiters from the ship showed up and drank with us. We ended up staying there till around 2:30ish then caught a taxi, and made the long ride home (it seemed a lot shorter on the way there). We were dropped off at the end of the port and had to walk half a mile back to the ship, while a bunch of dogs barked at us. They said at our cultural pre-port that one of the main things you had to watch out for was the rabid dogs. Great. But we made it safe, and I passed out as soon as I hit the pillow.
