... we walked towards the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sophia's most iconic attraction, and went inside. It was beautiful inside, a large space - no pews or seats in Orthodox churches - with walls and ceilings covered in frescoes and dozens of candles lit all around, which cheered Squirt up, who was a little fed up with Sofia and a little fed up with being cold. Walking back from the cathedral towards the hostel, we came across a German ...

      Greetings from Varna
Well, the ship has exceeded our expectations. We have found out we have a fantastic package unbeknown to us. On the evening of Day 1, on checking out our documentation, we saw Wave Prom, well we didn't know what that meant so down to Guest Relations to find out we can get all fresh juices, sodas, water, beer, wine and cocktails for free plus we don't have to pay any gratuities. ...

Bulgaria is amazing! Probably one of my favourite countries so far that I've ever been. We began in Veliko Tărnovo after another long train ride from Bucharest. We didn't get off to such a good start - we arrived at night at the train station, which we discovered is in the middle of nowhere. ... opposite hill, Trapezitsa, was also lit. I couldn't help but compare the glorious days of a 1000 years ago with the bleakness of present-day Bulgaria, which is still plagued by many problems even 25 years after the end of communist rule. What would our khans think if they saw us now? Would they feel their battles and great deeds were all for nothing? Are what we consider our negative national traits borne out of Turkish rule, or have we always been ...

... but have a sizeable streak of bare rock running along just below their peaks (possibly karst - not sure though). These hills are separated from the main part of Veliko Tarnovo by the River Yantra, which looks very far below us. I haven't been down there yet. To my right is another hill, this time with Tsarevets Fortress on top of it - I've decided to visit it either tomorrow or on Thursday. I look forward to exploring Veliko Tarnovo; I think I have definitely landed on my feet ...
