Renting a car is an adventure in itself

... corner and parked for 20 minutes. Once we got to the airport we walked around trying to find our rental booth. It turns out they don't have one, and were standing with Ally's name on a sign waiting for us at arrivals. Then we went out to the parking lot to look over the car and sign the contract etc. Everything was going good until they asked for payment in cash plus 200 euro deposit, all cash. They were really nice but that is not how we roll so we went to the car ...

... day i cover pretty much everything, and the next day i am like `Now what?` So i told him i was leaving, he told me i was a punk and i left. There are four different types of trains in Romania and `Personal` trains seem to be the most common, the cheapest and painfully slow. If you want to go anywhere except major cities you need to catch one of those. So i did. It took me 1 hour and 15 minutes to travel 37 kilometres. Train stations in ...

Peles Castle

... Apparently, not for long, though. It will be returned to King Michael in a couple of years and may be turned into a hotel although no one could say for sure. Trivia: It is the first European castle to be lit entirely by electricity. The electricity was produced by its own electrical plan located on the bank of Peles creek.

Land of Dracula!

... allowed inside, so there are only photos of the exterior. Inside it is a very multi- national theme with rooms decorated in Turkish design, Arabic, Japanese, loads of German woodwork and decoration, as the King originally was actually German! Lots of chilling out to be done in this amazing place, made so much more special by the people and their Polinka!!!

Vampires and monks in Transylvania

... spires (St. Nicolas) is directly down the hill from our hostel, as is the first school where the Romanian language was used (its a museum now). We walked through the Gate of Brasov, saw the Brasov (Hollywood) sign on the hill, and several of the important Gothic looking buildings around the city. The strange thing was the weather, it would snow every other hour, sometimes big puffy flakes, sometimes a lot more like sleet. 14 November: When we woke in the ...

Trees of Green

"I see trees of green, red roses too, I see them bloom, for me and you. And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world" - Louis Armstrong I want to make this point, but before I do, I want to make it clear that neither myself or my companion Vinny subscribe to Backpacker Pretention. It's not something we rate highly - any pretension that is, but particularly Backpacker pretension We have met, for example, those that say things like "Oh, God, you're staying in a place ...

Vlad Tepes a.k.a. Dracula

... This palace is certainly a hidden gem as most have not heard of it and so the place has relatively few tourists. Once the word spreads, I am sure tourists will flood in so perhaps a good time to invest into hotels in the area. This area also has many beautiful Romanian houses which are very unique in their styling and in their use of sheet metal or bronze as roofs. At the palace, they were very strict and did not allow any picture taking. They screamed at anyone who took ...

A little Touring Before the Work Begins

Since we are still banned from the orphanage at this point, we are making use of our time and doing a little sight seeing around the country. We spent the last weekend in the mountains of Transylvania, in a beautiful town called Sinaia. It is a big tourist destination and hence does not seem to be suffering too much from the poverty affecting other regions. The drive up on the bus was very interesting, as it seems everyone loves to pass, regardless of ...
