Off to see the Wizard

... have the really big barrel cones. The lane was narrow to begin with and one of the cones was off line of the others. Well something sticking out on the top of the barrell clipped the bottom of the awning. Lets just say there was a big thud. We pulled over and found the wheel well was damaged, the support for the awening, that is attached to the side of the rv was damaged, and ...

Topeka Day Trip - the Zoo and Brewery Tour

The temperature was cool as we drove from Kansas City, Missouri to Topeka, Kansas early on Saturday morning. We enjoyed our coffee and brief rain showers as we made the hour drive on the Kansas Turnpike, confident in the directions from Samantha, our GPS guide. Along the way we stopped at QT for fuel and later at a rest stop for, um, me. Both times Sam's voice seemed mildly exasperated as she suddenly announced, "recalculating" and began instructing us how to return to our programmed ...

The Fourth of July!

... was nothing short of terrific! We went to the Brookville Hotel, they only serve on meal, fried chicken with busicuts gravy creamed corn and everyone gets a half of a chicken and as much of everything else as they want it is all served family style and homemade icecream for dessert.

The ride today was a bit of a surprise after days of flats we ...

Old Friends in New Places!

A short driving day today - about 3 1/2 hours, to Perry, which is just west of Topeka. Sherry and Joe, old friends of Greg's from 20-some years ago when he worked in Custer, South Dakota, had asked that we stop for a visit on our way past, and we are SO glad we did, because we had a wonderful afternoon and evening with them. We parked the motorhome in Slough Creek Park, next to Lake Perry, and they came to see the "house ...

Late night at the Phog

We had the chance to go see the first practice of the year for the greatest basketball team in the land so we headed to Lawrence to check out the Kansas Jayhawks. We met up with Darren's buddies Bird, P-Man, and Scott Lovenstein along with their families. The Jayhawks have the greatest tradition in all of college bball and we witnessed them add to it when ...

Day 30 - 316 Miles - Toto, we're still in Kansas

... for things to see in this area which wasn't very much until you get to Kansas City. So here we are in another Motel 6 but without internet. Somehow someone or something flipped the switch off and the night clerk doesn't know how to reset it. So the blog and photos will be a little late. Sorry. Dang internet. Didn't Al Gore invent that thing anyway. Maybe they told him where the switch is.

Found our Kicks on Route 66

We left Mount Vernon Illinois this morning and found the Old Route 66 Bridge going from Illinois to Missouri.  As you can see Bill wasn't sure which way to go he was between states. We walked 3/4 of the way across and I took these pictures of the water flowing across the rocks which I guess this is where the name Chain of Rocks Bridge.  The rest of the day was spent just driving from one city to another Kansas City Missouri then Kansas City Kansas.  So far the ...

Another day of tumbling

... to leave with, I'm reminded of a saying a wise man often says, "we are all just tumbling through this life together". Now, I must tumble my way down the road to Boulder, Colorado. It's approximately 8 hours from here, but I'll gain one more hour as I head to Mountain Standard Time. Just a friendly reminder that I will be 2 hours behind most of you. I suppose 10 hours from you Dad. Goodness! Any case, have a good and eventful day! Giddy up, Heather

The world isn't flat

Don't make fun of Kansas! It's a nice state. And big. Craig and I stopped there after Lincoln and before Jefferson City in September 1993 on my Moving Back South trip. It was a generally pleasant day; we'd had a good drive and my impression was favorable. I don't remember much about the inside of the capitol, but the grounds were attractive and you could park nearby. Sons Mike, Rick and Scott and I buzzed through Topeka in July 1980 ...
