Alabama's hidden gem?

... fun. After the show, we went to lunch with the crew at the wonderful hometown restaurant next door called Lunde's. They stayed open past their normal lunch hours just for us. I had a fried catfish po'boy, and was full for the rest of the day. The guys then invited us to their house this Saturday on our drive up to Decatur, AL from New Orleans. We'll see if we make it, but I bet it would be fun if we do.

... with a waterfall in the background.

It was profoundly moving to be in Montgomery with the trolley and the many placards placed around the city, refreshing our recollection of this difficult time in our country's history. I am so glad Marney gave us one of the most memorable and educational experiences we've had in almost two years on the road.

That night, to top it all off, Marney made us dinner and had two of her ...

... saw the design of a thistle as clear as a lightening strike. It was such a powerfully clear dream she jumped up and drew what she had seen. She then found an artisan to carve the thistle design into the staircase. I have included a close up in the pictures. Looking closely at this house reveals more and more detail of fun and imagination!!! The-day-before-Thanksgiving dinners and opening-day-of- hunting dinners are served up here at the long table every year. I can easily imagine how homey ...

Marney von Gal - Garzon

I believe I have been sufficiently fortified by sunshine, sand and fresh fish to give these Alabama entries the time and attention they deserve. Getting together with the Alabama vonGals was as gracious and heartwarming as it was educational. It was also like a marathon or a rally event. We were back and forth between the sisters as they arranged their busy schedules to accommodate our visit with one entertainment to the next. To do justice to all of the parts of ...

Getting soaked in Montgomery

... used. By the way Davis is buried in the same cemetery where my family has a plot in Richmond.

After about three hours in Montgomery I headed west and stayed on US 80. What an amazing ride that was. I was pretty much in the middle of no where the entire day. Somewhere between Dublin and Montgomery I was it by some angry storms. The rain I can handle. When the wind is blowing so hard that it pushing me into oncoming traffic I need to pull over. I ...

A Day on the Farm

Believe it or not, there are 54 Championship Holes at the Capitol Hill Golf Course in Prattville, AL that are part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Jerry took the opportunity to get in a round of golf and was amazed at the beauty and pristinely maintained course.

While Jerry was hitting a small ball around Prattville, Alex & I spent some time in the pool to cool off. Bella used to jump into the pool to me when she was a puppy, but I couldn't ...

Out in the Middle of Nowhere

We left the Gulf Coast today and headed into Alabama to visit with Aunt Kathy and Uncle D. I used to live with Aunt Kathy and Uncle D in Florida. But I haven't been to visit then in Alabama for the last 5 years. What a great reunion.

My cousin Jackie cooked up some homemade lasagna and these ...

... the street reminiscent of when the lizard jumped on his chest at dinner in Costa Rica. Locals don't seem bothered. A quick search of the area reveals no other night-time places to go so we head to the outskirts away from the infestation for drinks then sleep in the slightly seedy parking lot of Buffalo Wild Wings - lots of people eating wings. (We play trivia - despite an American history handicap, Ted is humbled once the bet is laid down).

Montgomery - civil war and civil rights

... outside is told through film and displays. Their strength of character is most evident in their ability to stick to their pledge of non-violent protest, whatever came their way. Montgomery is where Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger, an act which resulted in her arrest and instigated a year-long boycott of the buses by the black population of the area, crippling the city's bus system and ...

Cranky Old Guy

... jaws, and eyes that barely veil a hate and venom for the world. They are thin, they wear tight jeans and ill fitting tops, they tow children behind them with no interest in whether the children are on their feet or not. They scare me. There really are men who spend the day shirtless, drinking beer bought at the gas station (coming from PA, to see gas stations selling beer, hard booze, you name it, what a wake up!) while sitting on the hoods of their cars with their ...
