Pigeon Forge is about a 20-30 mins from the entrance of the Smokies. But it took us over an hour to drive from the park to Pigeon Forge because it is bumper to bumper traffic. Worked out to do it on the way out. Stayed a night in Sevierville (2km from Wonderworks). ...
Day 6: Fishing at Tumbling Waters Campground & Trout Pond. $4/lb. (we caught 2 trout and paid $6). All bait and fishing gear provided. Was supposed to rent a pontoon boat from Almond Boat Dock($150/4 hours) but rained all day.
It was raining when we woke up - but we weren't going to let it stop us! We did rearrange our plans to go either tubing in Deep Creek or rafting on ...
Day 5: Hiking Appalachian Trail (at Fontana Dam). Then swim & rope swing at Cable Cove. Free.
Today was a quiet, lazy day. After sleeping in, we packed our lunches and headed to Fontana Dam to hike that section of the Appalachian Trail. We hiked for a little over an hour (the boys turned back earlier with the kids) and it was a steady uphill the whole time which was ...
... the Forest was a very nice hike - a little challenging as there was a steady climb. The boys quit halfway through, claiming boredom, retracing their steps to the parking lot. We girls pushed on and enjoyed the walk. Sadly, I missed the giant trees somehow. I'm still not sure how I missed seeing them - maybe I missed a spur on the trail?
After all this, we rejoined Phan and Thao at the motorcycle rental place and headed back for a bonfire at the cabin.
... We ended up paying for Will and myself and the kids helped. So we had 4 buckets between us. Had to dig our own dirt from a little "tunnel". Apparently, this was all native dirt, meaning no gems had been planted here to allow for instant gratification.
Took us about an hour to go through a bucket each, which was plenty of time for me. Only Matt wanted to do more - the rest of us were pretty tired - ...
