Day 1 - Arrival in Auckland

Arrived safe and sound 4:30am local time. After passing through passport check and customs we left the airport by cab and headed to the city. Amazingly we were able to check into our hotel at 6am allowing us to rest and cleanup before starting our day. The hotel is quite nice and located right next door to the famous Sky Tower. We plan to watch the sunset from up top. You can actually bungee jump off the 300 plus meters tall tower... but it won't be us! Once the sun came up we could see the c...

Auckland Highlights

We are only stopping over in Auckland for the night because we wanted to skip the plane that takes us to the Cook Islands at 2am. We spent the night at the Centra at the Airport and arranged to meet up with Donna's Uncle Simon and her brother in the Auckland. We met at the Sky Tower in Auckland and watched some idiot jump off it, it looks like fun but we decided to give it a miss. We walked down to Princes Warf and had a couple of cocktails in the the 5 below bar. Everything is made out of ic...

Auckland

04 January Another lovely day in Tauranga so we sat in the garden enjoying the sun all morning. Headed off after a big brunch and had a good drive to Auckland with not too much traffic until we got close. Nice hotel at the Sky tower so we enjoyed that for a while before having a swim and a spa. Went down to the viaduct to have a beer or three in the sun, and got dinner at an Italian close to the hotel. Absolutely amazing how many Asians there are in Auckland. I reckon well more than half of t...

... a harbour tour by boat, which was good...until it started peeing it down - soooooo bad!!! It's proper awful here now. We got off at one of Aucklands islands (they have 50 volcanoes here! They are called the 'ring of fire'. How cool!) which was uber pretty, you would have loved it. The xmas trees were very pretty too! The history here is amazing : too much to put into this but I'm trying to remember it all so ...

The Gravity Appreciation Society!

... As we are about to install the replacement window the families Gran arrives offering a post office glass of wine, generous but ill timed. There is a time and a place for a glass of wine and before scaling a dangerous and dizzying roof-scape is most definitely neither. Taking my own advice I decline until we have completed the complicated maneuver. Window in place with no fatalities and no injuries either, now is the time for a large glass of wine, what no beer? Wine will be fine!

The Little Big City

... walk to the center of town in twenty minutes. And we've got the Auckland Domain (a huge park where lots of events happen) on one side and a smaller park (with a playground!) diagonal from that. There's always something going on and it's usually free which is great! And I drove to a nice beach today that was only twenty minutes away in the car. So I'm starting to not mind the city. By the end, I might even be convinced into liking it.

A little treat for myself!

Well today was a day of walking the city, going to the Qantas ticket office to make some amendments to my onward flight and buy some new underwear!!!! Got up and went to the Qantas ticket office and managed to change my flights, yay! Now i know what I am doing for the next few months......and when i am going back to the UK! Pavlova, finally

... maybe passionfruit?) syrup.  On top of that was whipped cream.  I was definitely impressed.  This is going to be the food that I try to find  a recipe  for so that I can recreate when I get home. I headed back to the hotel, but Rachel, Mike and mom stayed to gamble.  I suppose if you're into that sort of thing it would be something to do, but I prefer my money in my own pocket and I was really tired. Tomorrow: Glow worm caves
