The Rendevous

At 6am I hauled myself out of bed for yet another early start, grabbed some breakfast from the coffee shop across the street and got picked up and taken to the bus. As I stepped on I am amazed by the leather upholstery and the bed like reclining seats! Three hours later we had arrived at the Vietnamese side of the border. Here we had to get our bags and trek through to passport control where the officer stamped every single one of the thirty passengers passports and put them in a big pile whi...

Everybody Looks Suspicious

Started off the day with baguette, butter, jam and coffee at the Lazy Mekong Daze. This was my favorite place in town, because you could enjoy decent food as you stare at the Old French Lighthouse across the river. I wasn't happy with the Mekong Hotel, because their breakfast ended at 9am and they weren't willing to negotiate any prices, including the daily rate for the bicycle. On the other hand, what did I expect for $6 a night? Got a ticket on a Phnom Penh Sorya Transport bus for $3. It wa...

No matter what I do, I cant imagine that time

After arriving in Phnom Penh and spending an evening with the other interns, I woke up Monday morning refreshed from my flight from Pakxe and took a really quick shower because I had to meet everyone downstairs at 7:30. Babsea met us at the hotel and we all boarded two tuk tuks to take us to the Cambodian Genocide Tribunal. We arrived at the Tribunal, which was quite a little way from the city and had to show our passports to get tickets into the tribunal. We had to check all of our stuff and...

Arrival in Phnom Penh

... festive honking of the horn by the driver. We stopped once after three hours or so for half an hour, no idea where, and I had lunch in a little restaurant. Back on the bus, and another three hours later the bus arrived at the company's office near the river. I got a tuk-tuk south-west to my hotel, situated east of the Olympic stadium. I was shown my room and it was pretty decent. I went back to reception to check in and spoke to a girl who spoke brilliant English, even at times ...

Killing Fields and amazing sunsets

... level of English. It all worked out anyways because we got to sit in super comfy chairs on a deck overlooking the river behind the popular guesthouse spot and watch a spectacular sunset, one of my favorites on this trip.

As with most places, we wish we had more time to hang out and get to know the city more. Despite the hustle and bustle the capitol is pretty tame and we felt really comfortable navigating around. There are a ton of NGO's set up here (as in Siem ...

Elephants and temples, (but mostly elephants).

30 July:

On Thursday we booked a tour to Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre, through Lazy Gecko Cafe. The rescue centre is one of the best I've ever seen, and they are constantly improving conditions for the animals. We started out walking through an enclosure with hundreds of long-tailed macaques roaming around freely. "Put on your sunglasses" Sun told us, “If you look them in the eye, they’ll think you’re challenging them ...

Posting books is too expensive and we can't carry them, so we sold them all for about $2 each to second hand books shops (D's Books and Bohr's Books). We've spent most of the money we got from them on new books already !

The Royal Palace and silver pagoda were a bit of a let down ...

Ruins, Ocean and more in Cambodia

... and 1 Swedish and they were all coming to visit him this summer so he was quite in trouble, poor guy!) while we watched Khmer Karaoke songs in the TV or cheesy love movies or an old chinese series starring a magic monkey and pig. Whenever we sat there and drank beer and had a glimpse of the tv the same was on happily followed by a horde of giggling girls working at the guesthouse. Next day the tuktuk drivers friend drove us to the temples (F*** bicycling) which was a much ...
