Yesterday started at 4 am. I was picked up by a lovely man named Francis. Pitch black but for the door lights that twinkle as if the stars had come to rest in the valley for the evening. Even so early in the morning the Rwandans are up, heaving piles of narrow eucyliptis trunks, baskets of potatoes, bags of neatly folded laundry, brilliantly colored mattresses, heavy yellow jugs of water and a few leashed goats. They carry these items mostly on their heads but some ...

It became known that his life was likely in danger, so the couple fled at night to Tanzania where they stayed for two years until the situation settled down. The flight from Nairobi was rough but thankfully short. We spent about thirty minutes on the ground at Bujumbura picking up some people and Linda and I spent a moment or two standing on the landing outside the rear door of the plane looking around. We asked one of our seat mates to ...

... the genocide 20 year anniversary remembrance activities going on in Rwanda. Apparently his long hair (somehow) gives him an air of professionalism. Elias was a little trooper during the 30-minute flight. Rwanda is clean, organized, and even has traffic lights with a count-down system (although it does get stuck at "0" a lot). It is considered one of the least corrupt and most forward-moving countries in Africa. Our guest house was beautiful. It ...
