Arrival in Aucklanf

We had a 3 hour boatride round Bay of Islands yesterday which was Tim's birthday then climbed Flagstaffe hill which has 360 views of the Bay. wonderful. Unfortunately I forgot to pack some of his presents but he was none the less very pleased with the 'Woman Control '- a remote control so I obey his every whim. ;-) Thanks Bern and Lynda and Pat for the cards. Evening time we had an Italian meal outside and as usual collapsed fairly early into bed (before 10pm) waking to the sound of birdsong...

All Gone a Bit Pete Tong....

I was had made great pains to arrange to stay on the bus for one more day so that I could go horse trekking, so in the morning I set off with the others, and everything seemed to be going fine. We made a breakfast stop and got provisions for lunch. We stopped at Taranaki falls and made the 1.5hr (round trip) trek to the falls for lunch which was lush. Still all seemed well. We set off for River Vallery where I was going trekking. We stopped for an icecream, and I just happened to casually ask...

All Black terrority... Auckland

Back to civilisation. Our first impressions of New Zealand is how easy it all is. After 8 months chicken/pig buses, mosquitoes, crazy border crossings, screaming touts and speaking Spanglish (Spanish with English thrown in), we are finding it all too easy in the land of New Zealand. It's a totally different experience to the South/Central American madness that we have come to love so much, but it is still a good one. Warren picked us up at Auckland airport at the wee hour of 6am. To be picked...

Random is the word!

Just a few days before I was due to leave New Zealand I discovered that my younger brothers' first cousin Mikaela lives there. I was in the south island at the time, and would only have a day and a half in Auckland before leaving for Sydney. As luck, or "randomness!" would have it, Mikaela lives in Auckland, and after a few missed calls and messages - she even went so far as to change her voice mail to say "Marie, I'd love to meet up, please call me after 8pm!" - we arranged to meet. Proving ...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Sky City Auckland Hotel

Helpful Staff

from A TripAdvisor Member
Nicely situated in the centre of Auckland. The room l stayed in was clean & spacious. The staff were very helpful & polite. A good place to be for an evening drink & live entertainment. The Sky Tower was well worth a visit. The Buffet food restaurant was slightly disappointing though.

International quality heaven in Auckland

from plexus
As one of the lucky people to be the first to stay in Skycity Grand Hotel I was expecting world class service and opulence and was not disappointed.

The check in was efficient and friendly and after proceeding up the security elevators I was greeted with a very modern, clean and well thought out room with the whitest bathroom I have every seen. Whilst the room was simple it had everything you would expect in a five star hotel and its décor was pleasant and inviting.

Dinner was in Dine by Peter Gordon, I've eaten in Peter's restaurants in London and Wellington and he just gets better and better. The service was impeccable and the food to die for, you simply cannot visit Auckland without eating at Dine. But you will need to book well in advance.

A few bugs to iron out with Concierge as they did not handle my request for flowers and a card for a family member without errors but when pointed out the helpful staff fanned out into Auckland city to fix the problems.

Breakfast on the 4th floor was elegant and whilst not the best variety, the standard was as good as I have had in any five star hotel.

Overall a very present experience and certainly Skycity Grand will become the must stay hotel in Auckland and Dine by Peter Gordon the only restaurant to eat in.

Visa problems

We had a room at the Sky City hotel on Jan 29 for one night only, prepaid in Australia, before joining a cruiseship. On arrival we were asked for a credit card which I handed over and thought nothing about it.The next day we handed in our keys and advised them that we did not use anything from the bar and we left.Since then we have been debited $36 N.Z twice, once 31 jan.second march4 and as we haven`t used any nor gave permission for them to debit us we`d like to know what is going on.Can`t reach them by phone, our travelagent has sent three faxes and no answer so what else can we do?Thank you Gerda van der Voort

yesterday I complained about the hotel billing us for something we have not used and after ringing them today it has been all worked out, they still should have replied on our faxes but we are happy now thank you.

Excellent

Cant say enough about it. Excellent staff, food, entertainment and value for money.

A great place to gamble too!!

Good value for price

from Recall
We stood 3 times at the hotel during Nov. and Dec. 2004. Rooms are quite spacious and clean. At one stay we had booked a suite for for a great rate of 299 NZD breakfast for 2 included and had a really large accomodation. Staff was friendly and did everythings to make the stay enjoyable.

However, the main restaurant is a rather uncharming room. Nevertheless, why have dinner at the main restaurant when you can have it at the top of the sky tower with a breathtaking view of Auckland. Meal are not very expensive but are on the other hand not outstanding.

At all, we liked our stays at the hotel and will choose it again.

No charm

from A TripAdvisor Member
Didn't much care for it. Felt like a warehouse for people. But it was functional and clean if lacking in any charm.

A slight hint of Seediness

from Eirey
Sky City complex itself taints the hotel that is built into it. It is a casino hotel so although there is lots of activity going on there is also a lot of people losing money who really look like they cant afford to ... The rooms were not bright and bluish and seemed dark, with dim lighting too. I didnt like the executive suite we stayed in. I lived in Auckland for a while and would prefer some of the other city centre hotels. However Sky City is very central and if you are looking for a late night party atmosphere this is probably about the only hotel in Auckland you will find it at!

Bright inviting colors!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in an executive suite for US$96/nite and we felt that was a great price for what we received. The room was decorated in bright blues with some other colorful highlights that made the room enjoyable. The bathroom was blue tile and a big solid glass shower door. I thought the 2 buttons on the toilet were kind of neat. (1/2 flush and a full flush). The maid kept the shampoo, soap and bath gel replenished everyday. The only drawback was there was some heavy soap scum or buildup on the shower floor.

They also offer a business center with 2 internet ready PC's, phones and a laser printer (free of charge)

Other than that I would have no problem staying there again in an executive suite.

Awesome

My Hubby and I have been going to the sky city hotel for six years and every year it gets better! We stay in the Luxuary suite which is beautiful I love that they do such awesome packages that include your breakfast, dinner, tickets to the top of the sky tower plus much much more.. The service is quick and very reliable.. the staff are all great!!

Tiny rooms, a bit cell-like

from A TripAdvisor Member
The rooms were ridiculously small and there was nothing charming about it... also, more expensive than other hotels in its league.
