Whats typical Norwegian

I went to Stavanger in june to attend the beach volleyball world tour, but when I got there I
fund so much else to do that I didnt find the time to watch the volleyball. Its was insane, and
the best part is that everything is so close that you can do alot in one day. I spendt 10 days there
and it is without doubt the best vacation I have ever been on.

I live in Amsterdam and ...

Packing again

... Romans. I don't know how they know that.

Was a tough life back then. The woman they found in a nearby grave had died of old age at 36 and had no knee caps! She had been kneeling down at the various household tasks, like grinding corn etc, for so long that they had worn away. Ouch. The women actually had equal standing in that society, but they lost all their rights when Christianity hit town and started teaching that they ...

The Lysefjord near Stavanger

Another couple mad train rides from Bergen to Oslo and then over to Stavanger took us to small oil town, from where we would make our way to the beautiful lyseford. The fjord is quite deep, and we came to take the hike up to the Preikestolen, high above the fjord. The hike was great, and though we were soaked by rain upon arriving in Stavanger, it wasn't too bad during the 2 hour trek up.

Norway: two hikes in two days

... that easy: the weather was wet, the trail was slippery and very primitive, and the walk to the fjord, a mere 270 m up and down is more like a climb. But I made it and return in one piece in 4.5 hours (1030-1500). Two nice hikes, a lot of beautiful sceneries, the hostel is good albeit Spartan and a bit pricy: 25 USD for a dorm bed (the all-u-can-eat breakfast that comes with it was great) and $45 for a not-very-impressive 3 courses dinner. But its location is ...

Arctic Cuisine - next frontier in Food

... in the overall taste and presentation, Skeie topped them all. Asked if the win would see him in pursue an executive chef position at one of Europe's grand Michelin-star restaurants - Skeie's answer was a definite 'no'. Skeie, who has already worked at top restaurants in France and Denmark, is now co-owner and executive chef at Midtåsen Solvold, a fine dining restaurant outside Stavanger in a converted manor house. Australia might find its match in Skeie and his ...

Stavanger - a culinary stage

The stage for the inaugural Bocuse d'Or Europe culinary championship - Stavanger in Norway - this year's cultural capital of Europe, is perhaps better known as the oil capital of the North Sea than for its culinary arts. Never before has a Bocuse d'Or championship, founded by world-renown chef Paul Bocuse and regarded as the Formula 1 event for young chef talent, been taken outside the gastronomic centre of Lyon. The ...

Stavanger, European Capital of Culture

... busy time in Norway, when every community becomes a hive of cultural activity encouraged by the long days of never-ending daylight to show off works created during the long winter months. Even the smallest and most remote community have something on offer, from a photo exhibition in a converted light house right out at the edge of the North Sea, to "s ...

... that if he did we should gently tap on the bed to wake him. I swear to God that I have never heard a human being, conscious or otherwise, make such a wide variety of noises and at such a volume as during that night. After 6 hours of room-trembling snoring - during which he seemed to developed a radical new four-way breathing method that allowed him to simultaneously inhale and exhale and thus maintain a constant drone below the rising crescendo of terror (as I have taken to ...

Christmas Traditions

For some reason, it doesn't really seem like Christmas to me - which is surprising considering that I am in a country where Christmas is a very important holiday. There are special Christmas foods in all of the grocery stores here and it seems like every store is selling some type of decoration. Most houses and apartments have decorations with white lights in ...

Stavanger and Pulpit Rock

... was Cup Noodles, we simply couldn't afford not to as we had no idea when will be the next time a kettle was available in our room. Our optional excursion to Pulpit rock was a mistake. We should have done it on our own. The reason is that we only got to see it from the bottom. Arrggh! . This optional tour was meant for old ***** who cannot endure the 2 hrs hike up the rock. Anyway, the tour started with us walking to the harbour and took a cruise up the ...
