Epic Fall Break: Part II

Forty five minutes after our depressing departure from Santorini, we arrived at the island of Ios. The island isn't as well known as Santorini, and was much less touristy. We got to the port and were picked up by our next friendly hostel owner, Kiriagos (I think?) along with four other American students who were on their fall break from Rome were also staying at the same hostel. He drove us up to the top of this hill overlooking the whole island, which is where Hotel Skala was located. It ...

The Dream of all dreams

Friends, we are on Ios Island in the Cyclades southeast of mainland Greece.  I am writing this on one of the MacBooks lent out by this coffee shop in the village.  Greeks love their little hole-in-the-wall coffee shops and I have to admit, I love them as well!   After Croatia, we took a ferry from Split to Ancona, Italy.   Excerpt from Scooter:  Well... Our original plan to see Europe included Italy from top to bottom.  However, as we snaked through Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, our plan to ...

Exploring the island

... walk around it and get out onto the headland to see off in the distance islands dotting the Aegean.

Feeling a bit peckish we headed down to Perissa Beach to see if we could find some lunch. Lucky for us there was a tavern open that had seats right on the beach so we enjoyed the late afternoon sun watching the waves crash on the black pebble beach, eating some typical taverna food. I have to say that we enjoyed the best Greek salad we had eaten in Greece.

... because we walked slowly, took breaks and lots of photos. At times the route is on a cobbled path and at times it’s just a goat track. It climbs up and down and skirts the cliff edge at all times. It really is something to experience. Along the route are dotted a series of picture-perfect chapels. I was disappointed to find them locked though.

Although the walk is only 12 km, its climbs and descents make it very challenging, at least for us and we were completely buggered ...

Milapatos Beach

From Santorini to Ios we took the Flying Cat 4 for 18EUR and it took about 30 minutes. I wish I could remember the name of the hotel we stayed at. The owner came to the port to pick us up. We stayed in Milapatos Beach. The room was nice...clean and we had a great balcony that overlooked the beach. The ...

on the boat....again

... up the main street around 2am and had our own walking pub crawl because most of the bars don't have cover charge. By the end of the night we had closed 2 bars and left the 3rd around 6am, stubbling our way back to the hotel!!!!! The first bar we shut down was a lot of fun, it played good canadian/american music that we knew, so we had our drinks and danced till 5am when they closed, not before playing 2 U2 songs just for us.

These two houses out of nowhere, are actually painted very nice, and they aren't any special buildings. We just cannot resist and had to stop our car just to take a picture of them!

Greece also export a lot of pistachios. And it is from here that we first see a pistachio tree. They ...

Santorini, here we come!!

Yay.... We are heading to Santorini today! We had to take an expensive flight from Aegean air, although the journey is much shorter than the flight from London to Athens, the price is actually much more expensive! Oh well, we don't have much choice, and I'm not willing to waste our time to go to the port to take a ferry to Santorini. And we get too see this aeriel ...

Finally leaving

... game, the second that game ended, there was silence. It was eerie. On a related note, the night Australia clinched its way into the knockout phase there was a blackout on the island -- and it couldn't have come on a better night. Australia played a late match, so all the drunk Aussies came out to celebrate instead of turning in for a nap never to emerge again. The whole night had a certain energy to it, but once the power went out, everybody left the bars they were in and poured into ...
